Andrew's 1/72 Airfix Typhoon IB (starter kit)

    Hi all

Now the Academy Spitfire is across the finish line, this will be my next build - a return to my first love that is the one true scale of 1/72! That's right 1/72 is THE one true scale!!

So this has been sitting on my workbench for about two months, saying build me.....mainly because I have no room to put it away!!

These really are one of my all time favourites, as evidenced by the fact this is the first wingy kit (different boxing) I built (badly) on my return to the hobby, the fact that I have another six in the stash and the fact that I have a 7th very special one arriving as a Christmas present.

This was a Fleabay purchase for a reasonable price and although the kit and decals are intact, going by all the other box pics of this kit, I am sure the paints and brush blister have been removed and reattached at some point, not that I am at all worried.

As it happens I am considering trying to use the kits paints as a sort of challenge and have even thought about doing it gun bays open, as that is an option with the kit and I have never done that sort of thing before.

Below you will see the usual obligatory box and sprue shots, reference material and my previous attempt (try not to laugh).

    ACW as usual.

    Andrew

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Box, AM, sprues and reference material!

And this is my first attempt at this kit and what I have to 'beat' with this build.....May 2018....and as you can see badly done with the brush and yet I still have it and won't throw it away because it's part of my modelling journey and a reminder of just how far I have come!!

Thanks Joe! I certainly hope so....although doing it gun bays open does complicate things a bit!

            Hi all

So much progress already today, much to my surprise. Lots of items big and small cut off sprues and even primed this evening.

I even had time to put in a new sheet of paper I use to protect the spray booth floor.....as you will see it was due a change!

Next up some paint.....and as I said before, I'm going to give my self the challenge of using the starter paint sets wherever possible....

            --------------------------------------------------

Definitely time for a clean sheet......

Forgot to take a pic of the clean sheet ahead of priming but you get the idea!!

Primed items - big, small and tiny!

A very speedy start . These newer Airfix kits are usually really nice. We had a GB a while ago in which we just used the stuff in one of these starter kits. It was fun and some great models were built.

Thanks Jim, they're not bad are they! Good job too....according to Scalemates, I have 38 of their newer wingy kits in the stash.

I do remember talk about that GB but I think it was just before I joined.

A great start. I too have my first build (well since returning to the hobby) and no one has ever seen that !

I have recently finished an Airfix Typhoon and can confirm they go together very nicely ?.

                    Enjoy your build Andrew ?

                    Geoff.

Thanks Colin! To be honest if the picture was not slightly blurry, I'm not sure I would put it up myself!! ?

Thanks Geoff! They are nice aren't they!! I've learnt quite a bit about them now I've had a chance to read my book and so some additional research!

                        Morning chaps!

So before the next update I thought I'd mention an article I came across one the key.aero website, which fully documents the history of the squadron that this Tiffy will be marked up as - 266 Rhodesian Squadron***. It even includes a nice-side on pic of the very plane I am building, albeit I don't have the wing mounted fuel tanks shown in the pics (they're apparently the same as ones used on Hurricanes). There is also another article on their earlier years as a Spitfire Squadron.

                        Link here: www.key.aero/article/rhodesian-eagles-266-sqns-typhoon-years

As for the build, pilot in place, all buttoned up, minor filling where needed and primed in black.

Having just worked on a 1/48 Spit, I had forgotten how much you can't see at 1/72 and so I wasted a lot of time prime and painting bits that will never be seen....so next time, I won't bother unless absolutely necessary.

Oh and as usual, the pilot was too tall and so I had to chop his feet off to make him fit!

                        ACW as usual.

                        Andrew

*** I am of course aware of the colonial connotations with the use of Rhodesia but that is what the squadron was called at the time.

                        ----------------------------------------------------------------

Pilot in situ pre-buttoning up - minus his feet!

                        Buttoned up pre-primer

All primed.....gun bay masked with tape - I used the holes cut in the wings to create the masks before I glued it together and it worked perfectly. Wheel wells are filled with AK masking putty and very good it is too for the task!

That's looking very nice Andrew. Glad you got the pilot in - they never seem to fit with legs attached!

Good progress seems to be a well engineered kit

Looks kinda cool in black, they'd've made a formidable night attack aircraft for sure
