Ok chaps so a big update...the main part of the paint job is done, as you'll see you below.

The anti-glare paint on the real thing's cowling is mostly black, with the cockpit and the bit in front being an olive-ish green - although you have to really zoom in to see it.

In terms of the main paint job, I have followed that of a review (link) as this seemed to make sense from what I had read, what I could see in the picture of the real thing and it matching with the Eduard and Airfix guides. I did though adapt it slightly to try to account for what is clearly a well used aircraft that is not very shiny:
    • Puttied wings with Vallejo Metal Color “Dull Aluminum" - I added a drop of dark aluminium to try to darken it slightly.
    • The rest with Vallejo Metal Color “Aluminum” - I added a drop or two of dull aluminium, again to take the shiny-ness down a notch
    • The fabric-covered rudder with Vallejo Metal Color “White Aluminum” to mimic aluminium lacquer - again I added a drop of dull aluminium to tone it down - but it is definitely lighter in the picture of the real thing

For those who have not used it before, Vallejo Metal Color sprays beautifully and I have been told by people I trust that it is the best water based metallic paint out there. No dry tip and great coverage too. I actually had to be careful not to overdo the paint job in order to try to preserve the mottle effect I was after, as it covers much better than the standard Model Air paints.

Considering this is the first metallic finish plane I have ever done, I'm pleased with how it has turned out. Although it's hard to pick out due to the reflective nature of the paint, I have managed to preserve the mottling in places, so it is not a monotone block of silver. Hopefully you'll get the idea from some of the shots below.

I still have to do the bit around the exhausts and also do the yellow band on the rear of the fuselage.

    ACW as usual.

    ATB

    Andrew

Nice job on the paint Andrew. I always end up going to heavy on the top coats and end up covering any preshading but you have got that just right.

Thanks chaps! I actually finished the paint job late last night, so hopefully more pictures to follow shortly.

OK chaps, so a short update.

The main paint job is now finished. I sprayed on the yellow strip and hand paint the patch below the canopy where I imagine old US markings were quickly covered over (a bit heavy in one case ????).

I think next time I do a metal finish, I will do the coloured parts first and mask them....much easier than having to mask off most of the plane, plus with the metallic finish being smoother it can lead to runs if you're not too careful.

The main thing I did though was to take a gamble and mute the shine of the metallic coat a bit. No matter how you look at the real thing it was not shiny as we so often see depicted. There is a definite light matt patina to it. Whilst no doubt some of the this will be dust and muck, I wonder if some of it down to the aluminium reacting with the air overtime to create an aluminium oxide coat....but whatever the reason it's not nice and new looking, as you can see.

I therefore took a light grey that was a close match in tone to the aluminium (Vallejo Model Air Sky Grey 71.407), mixed it to a thinner consistency than normal - about 1:1 paint/thinner rather than my usual-ish 2:1 - and then gave it a couple of light mist coats from about 6-8 inches. It doesn't show well in the pics but it did have an effect. However, never having done it before I wanted to be careful and so, should I do it again, I will be a bit more aggressive.

FYI, the prop is just dry fitted.

                        ACW as usual.

                        Andrew
