    Rick's Airfix 1/72 English Electric Lightning F6

    Box and sprue shots

    The detailing kit

The first cut is the deepest. The panels marked are the ones that I plan to drill and file out but this depends on practicalities.

With the engine bay panel drilled and filed out the first trial fit of the resin engine can be done. The belly ventral fairing comes as a separate moulding in the kit and I may attempt a scratch built No.1 engine and leave the belly fairing off.

You could have got one for a tenner from Airfix last week. I built the F2 last year and really enjoyed it. The intake assembly on these need some care, there are ejection moulds on the inside of the fuselage that I think are fouling and preventing the nose coming together nicely. I'll trim them off when I get home with a dremel and re-check the fit.

Ohhh I like this I thought that the new mould was going to be good from Airfix but your doing a cutaway with engine showing now that's perked me up on attention. The cuts seem to be very good ( was the plastic soft enough) Airfix new plastics seem to be not as brittle as older Airfix kits ( my opinion )

                I'm in on this

I started to add some scratch built detail to this as well as one of the resin castings, the avionics bay on the opposite side will need some more work. When it's painted it should look a bit more realistic.

The intake trunking needed some of the width trimmed off using a dremel and sanding drum as well as the inside of the fuselage to make the nose come together as the two halves had a gap.

Getting the interior to fit on this kit is really troublesome, probably caused by the resin part and the hacking and bashing but I finally have the cockpit fitted to one half of the fuselage. Before fitting the other half some more dry fitting and scratch work will be required, the top will have a resin engine on view and I'd like to do something with the bottom, maybe a scratch built engine and leave the ventral fairing off to add interest. This will require making a frame for the aft part of the opening and detailing the exposed section at the forward end - all will become clear as this progresses.....I hope.
