    Airfix 1/72 Spit Mk9

Here is the Airfix new tool Mk9 in 1/72 scale. The fit of the parts are exelent, only slight filling and sanding was needed.

Pitty that the cockpit detail is rather bland, but maybe airfix's target market is not yet so worried about it.

The plastic bonds well and is workable with little effort.Pannellines are a tad deep, but maybe again aimed at the younger brushpainters.

I will shoot on a coat of primer and sand to fill them in a bit.

I have seen some Mk9's with a sharper tail than the round one on the model. Were there different tails on them???

It was the rudder that changed. According to the Spitfire site:

"Late production series airframes, typically Mk. IXe and Mk. XVI, were often fitted with the larger, pointed Mk. VIII-type rudder."

Dang! that messes about my idea to do any of the SAAF spits :-(

It will have to be the kit decals then....

The painting didn't go according to plan, the edge is to big and the pattern isn't correct. Next time I will just do a hard edge like on the Tempest.

Decals and clear satin to follow.

In that second photo of the painting process, it looks like a Spitfire-shaped lolly made of caramel and chocolate.

Someone get IWM Duxford on the phone, I've just had a great idea...
