Got the Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster for Christmas

Hi there

Wife and kids bought me the ridiculously pricey Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster for Christmas.

I have never built a Tamiya model before and the colour schemes in the instructions are not great as I know nothing about Tamiya paints.

Does anyone know of a link to a picture that shows the colour scheme for Humbrol paints........or does anyone have advice on which colours are best as I find that peoples advice can be different to the intructions sometimes.

Happy christmas to you all.

Hi Peter

Thanks for the above.

Which green and brown did you use for yours?

Also, is there a problem with the decals in the kit?

Hi navalpenguin
Humbrol 29 Matt Dark Earth & Hu: 116 Matt US Dark Green, bearing in mind this model has had a 'dirty treatment' done to the finish. As to the decals there is a major problem with the roundels for the wings, they are far two small, walkway lines should run up to the roundel and as you can see on the kits they don't, in fact I think the roundel should be for the Manchester. A set of RAF roundel decals from Hannants sorted this out and a custom logo made for the name. Also as pointed out if you try and build 'Lovely Lou' the size is way to big and the wrong font is used for front nose codes is wrong and the code was a different size from each other. I have added some pics so you see what I mean, just bear in mind this model had a great deal of work and extras fitted and then my style of photography, but I hope you like it
Peter

Hi Peter
Thanks. That is a cracking couple of models there. Why the hell do the model companies make such basic errors. For a kit that costs as much as the Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster you would think it would be almost perfect.

I thought I was a real aircraft buff...but before I got this I had no idea that the Lancaster only had one pilot......huh??

When you came to paint it (I hand paint) I was wondering about the windows that line the top of the fuselage. I have painted them a dark green before I put them into the fuselage, but when it comes to painting the outside.....did you have cover each with a tiny bit of tape and then pain it?

I notice in your pic that you have a B17. Is that the 1/48 Revell model? I tried that and gave up. I found it really furstrating. I just couldn't paint the ball turret at all.

First Lovely Lou didn't have windows so the kits windows were filled using plasticard. I use a mask if ever I need to have windows. As you say for the price of the kit, it's annoying to have these errors. You wait and see when it comes to the cockpit controls, this is four engine craft, so why have they only allowed for three throttles ???????. Of corse theres no problem if you go with PE parts.

and yes the Revell B17

Tamiya decals are dicey to say the least. Their 1/48 kits' decals are mostly horrendous. Grab yourself an AM set of decals and save yourself some grief. They tend to shatter on contact with water and a paintbrush when positioning them.
Also, a word of warning. While a wonderful kit, this is one of Tamiya's older kits, and does not have it's shake and bake characteristics. Also, it has raised panel lines that make weathering harder.
However, you'll have tons of fun with it.
Humbrol enamel is probably the wiser choice if you're going to hand paint. Tamiya acrylics are for airbrushing.
Cheers, John

Hi Fellas

Thanks for all the advice. Does anyone have a link that will take me to somewhere I can buy a full set of decals that are correct that also has instructions on where they should go?

Thanks
