    Tamiya 1/48 Heinkel HE219A-7 UHU

    This is my next build.Tamiya's 1/48 kit of the Heinkel 219 UHU (Owl).This kit comes with a metal cockpit insert to stop the model being a tail sitter.What a great idea and something i've not seen in a kit before.The cockpit is well detailed and im only going to add some Eduard seat belts to it.The undercarriage seems a bit flimsy so i've bought a Scale Aircraft Conversions white metal undercarriage set.This consists of a lot of small parts and i may try soldering them together.         Nice choice Dave. I trust you know about the low melting point of white metal. You will need a soldering iron you can adjust the temp and low melt solder. 60 or 70 degrees is fine.

          I've just finished building the cockpit.The Eduard seat belts make a difference and are worth the price of £5 in my opinion.The instrument panel has dials moulded on but no instrument details.So i just painted them black with a spot of gloss varnish to represent the glass.I will have to get Some 'Airscale' instrument decals for future builds.Anyway,the cockpit has been fitted to the metal insert and the whole assembly fitted into the fuselage.I've drilled the barrel ends and painted the 'Shrag Musik' cannons gunmetal,then given them a black wash.Thanks for the reminder about soldering Ian.I need to get a new soldering iron as the one i've got only has two settings,'off' and '...kin hot'!.So it would probably melt the white metal

            Nice looking office! I think I will have to get me some of those seat belt sets, they do look good don't they.

            Re the soldering iron: No probably about it. I found out the hard way. An electronic iron makes life a lot easier. I would recommend a selection of three or four solders with different temps. That way you can solder things in stages by starting with the hottest solder and work down to the coldest.

              Hi Dave looking good so far it is different to see the weight block in the kit i think in this day and age all manufacturers should put them in the kits that need them

                Too true, I'm currently building the revell 1:72 fairey gannet which needs a 15g weight in a small area in the front to make it sit on the front wheel properly. Fortunately I was able to get hold of some lead to use!!!!

                  I've sanded the fuselage joins and rescribed the detail that was lost in the process.The large aperture in the top has a pronounced step at the join line.Rather than spend ages trying to sand it smooth i've cheated and cut a thin piece of plastic card to fit.For this i used a new gadget i recently bought.A compass cutter.I bought it to cut discs of tamiya tape for masking wheel hubs for painting.But its come in handy for this job.Note the kit includes wing spars.As you can see i've also fitted the wings and tail.

                    I've got one of these to build and i'm loving this thread. Little known fact is that the He219 was the first operational aircraft to ever have an ejection seat

                      I've fitted the tail fins and glued the forward sections of the engine cowlings on.The flaps went on next.The kit gives a flaps down option,but i decided to fit them in the raised position.Still got a bit of filling and sanding to do but its coming together nicely.Not sure what colour to paint the undercarriage bays.The instructions say RLM grey With RLM 66 on the inside surfaces of the gear doors.So i've gone with RLM 02 in the bays.I know some late war Luftwaffe aircraft used RLM 66 or a natural metal finish in the gear bays but i dont know about this aircraft.Unless someone out there can enlighten me?.Where are you Steve/stona?.

                          Dave thats a great looking build so far ,as far as I could gather from the research I did for mine rlm 66 was used but 02 would'nt be out of sorts

                            Thanks trey.I know RLM 02 was a pre to early WW2 colour,but the instructions confused me.Think i will repaint them RLM66.The kits quite a nice kit to build but i dont think its any better than a good Revell kit.And Monogram were doing better interior detail years before Tamiya brought this one out.That said its good enough for me.And its not a bad price at £35.
