    spanner's Airfix 1/72 P 51-D Mustang.

Here's my next build. It was originally for Pete and Pete's G.B. but because of a problem, I've decided to divert it....

I'll still be using the diddy pot paints and brush......:flushed:

I've never built a Mustang and never brush painted 'Silver' on a large surface, so this kit seemed ideal to fill both criteria.
    However......
    Two things.

A - One of the pot paint colours is wrong.
The No.11 is supposed to be silver. The one in the kit is labelled correctly (11) but the colour in the kit pot itself is a very pale blue. Luckily I have a correct pot of No.11 silver in the 'Stores'..... :thumb2:

B - The decals are different to those on the Box Art. which is just a bit annoying. (Instrument panel cut out and applied)

I've had a think about this and decided, because I've swapped a tub of paint, the build no longer follows the Starter Kit in the box rules, so I've transferred this build to 'Aircraft Under Construction'

    Cheers.

      Hi Ron
Odd they mixed up the paint. Still a Baby Blue Mustang would have been cute :smiling2: That no11 silver was the main colour for my Vampire and taking you advice of multiple, well thinned coats, it went on really well.

Silver does settle a bit funny, are you sure it just didn't need a good stir ?

            Thanks chaps.
            The paint deffo. isn't silver.
            Here's a couple of pictures.

This is No.11 - 'Duff Silver' I've given it a good stir. It's stayed a pale blue that's for sure.

Here it is next to some No.11 'Proper' Silver. Although bubby from a quick stir, you can see the silvery bits in the correct paint.

The silver has a blueish tinge to it, so is this a duff batch of No.11? Someone forgot to add the silver bits!..... :upside:

...or simply the correct paint, but wrong number label?

No problem, as luckily I will just have enough silver from the 'Stores' to coat the aircraft.

            Cheers.

Just when you think that Airfix has made every possible mistake, they invent 2 more!
I wonder how many kits they packed that incorrect paint with.

Personally, I'd say your build still qualifies for the starter set GB, since you've only replaced a faulty pot of number 11 with a better pot.

Sure looks that way to me. They've got the binder and pigment in there but forgot to add the flakes. Epic fail Airfix :smiling5:

The sport now is to try and spot models, online or even in shows, painted using this faulty batch.

                      Interesting posts chaps....

                      On with the build.
I've built enough to start painting the airframe.

Pilot buttoned up. I mixed the supplied red and the green to obtain the brown for the pilot's leathers.

Because it is essential to work quickly when brushing the paint on, things like this will always happen.
Never, ever worry, just get the stuff on! It will be sorted later. Bit of a seam to sort out too....

I'll follow along if you don't mind Ron, I have some of these in 1/87 scale in the stash. I might be inspired to pull one out and have at it. Yours is coming on strong. Too bad about the decals.
                          Cheers, Rick H.

                              Thanks boys.

A leg end? Na, plenty of luck, plus I had a good teacher - My late dad..... :thumb2:

Final coat of the shiny stuff brushed on. It is really nice paint to put on.

When the paint dried I've rubbed the surface with my finger. This produced subtle dull/shiny shade differences on the 'Metal'
Next I'll start on the various colours.

                              Cheers all.
