How to build a flying scale model of the AVRO LANCASTER in 38 days

For the VE Day anniversary 2020 we have been asked to put on a ground display of important WW2 aeroplanes,the one missing is the Avro Lancaster although this will be my 7th model built of the Lancaster I do not have one for display,they have all been sold in the past,so the plan is to build one from scratch in between other projects,can I build it in 336 days ? ( in fact it was built in 38 days ) well today I received some drawings so those will be used as an outline basis for my own model so the first logs were cut all ready for carving and shaping then sanding and finally covering in my time tested technique of covering with a hard shell of brown paper,parts will then be cut away to fit the various bits and pieces needed,here the three sections have been glued together from foam blocks used to protect instruments,they will be left overnight to cure and tomorrow out comes the sanding blocks,saws and blades to get the Lancaster fuselage shaped up.
The model is 52 inches wingspan just a nice car size for carrying.

Today the depron side pieces were added to the big foam log,these are to build up the sides to the correct width,tomorrow the start of the carving and fine sanding will take place on the Lancaster project.
A spare set of blanks are being made that will go into storage just in case they are needed in the future.

After lots of pre planning I decided on making the wing centre section this way,basically pre cut aerofoil blocks are glued to a ply spar with ply end ribs,the reason for the 4 inch rib sections is so the material fits in the throat of my bandsaw,this method is stronger as a adhesive membrane is in place every rib section,once the assembly has fully cured it can be sanded and covered.

Working outside in the nice weather,essential with messy foam builds so I sunk the centre section of the wing into the fuselage pegging with barbecue skewers at different angles then trimming off then re-shaping the upper portion removed from the fuselage and placed it into position,this lot will take a few days to cure fully as foam seems to slow the adhesives drying time a lot,if possible I will place it in the sun soon as possible nature makes the best drier.
Meanwhile I have made the blue high density foam blanks for the inboard engine nacelles so the drying will not hold me up as I can work on other parts for the Lancaster.

A donor set of outer wings found in the Hilltop Aviation scrapyard suitably renovated and grafted onto the centre section of the Avro Lancaster project.







The inboard engine nacelles have been carved and sanded.
