Me 262 A-1a (Hobby Boss 1/48)

Hi guys,
My next 1/48 build is this Me 262 from Hobby Boss :thumb2:

On the Low-Right a metal part is included to replace the (High-Right) plastic part, to keep the noose-wheel down.


Left, some rocket/bombs I'll probably won't be using on this build. On the right the canopy parts I'll unpack later...


An A4 color image is included for the paint scheme.


I already started on the cockpit parts, this way I can combine my spray-booth-time with my current P-40 build.
The detail is good for my standards, you might want to order extra parts like seat-belts etc ...


I sprayed a black primer and then a German-Grey...

Watching this build Steven. They build up into lovely kits. The only slight thing i found was the detail under the cockpit tub is slightly lacking. But with the aid of photos on the net you can get some good scratch building done

Nice start. I built the little Airfix 1:72 and was quite surprised how much I liked the look of the 262. It's become quite a favourite of mine.

Do you mean the area visible trough the underside-hatches Alan? Will try to find some photos to compare it.

Yes I really like the look of the Me262 too, I think it's such an important airplane in the history of aviation.

I was able to work a little bit more on the Me262 :
The kit seems to fit very nicely and is well designed, a real relief after some of my 'cheaper' builds.
At the moment the only thing that I didn't like was the decal for the instrument panel, there was just too much white in it compared with this google picture.


So I removed the decal and painted the instrument panel, still not exactly correct but it will do, the canopy will be closed.
I made seat-belts from paper-tape and buckles from thin wire, I should have made them a bit finer though, lesson learned for a next build...


The cockpit-parts glued together...


I did some dry-brushing on the inside of the fuselage...


There is a metal replacement part added to the kit, to weight down the nose.
I'm building the Me262 with all panels closed, this means I have room in the tip of nose were the guns/ammo are supposed to be mounted to add some lead (weight).
So I prefer to use the plastic part, this makes it easier to glue the rest of the parts...


The cockpit and fuselages were glued together...


I added some paint to the rotors, as this won't be possible later. I glued the wheels together too...


At the moment most parts are glued together,
next I will add some lead inside the nose to get the balance-point right...

Yes i meant the detail visible through the wheel wells. Bit late now but i think they were not painted RLM 66 but left natural metal with the rivet detail painted in RLM 02. Others with more knowledge might confirm differently.

Not my thing, but I can't ignore the quality of the work on the cockpit. Truly impressive work there Steven.

These are the smallest brushes I use on all my detail-paintwork, I always get confused when talking about the brush-sizes so I took a picture with a ruler. (mm)


That's interesting, so the finish inside would look something like this then?

The markings there are the rivets having putty put over them to improve aerodynamics/reduce drag. I don't have access to the pics i have for the wheel well but this is what i did to my Me262 when using the reference pics. I painted a RLM 02 'band'along the rivet line. This was to protect them and try and stop corrosion starting.

I always get confused when talking about the brush-sizes

Every manufacturer uses the same numbers to mean different things, as far as I can tell.

Love this plane. Some of the early jets including the Korea war ones are really nice looking planes. Love the cockpit detail on this one. Quite impressed by this Hobbyboss as I was never sure about them

Yes Jakko, that's why I get confused about it all the time...
I once ordered an amount of "000" brushes because I loved using the first/smaller "000" brush, so these blue ones came in the mail ... but they had a tip 3 times the size of my first brush! Some will point out that it's the size of the 'tip-shape' but for me these were useless :thinking: ...



I did some work on the Me262, first I cut a few pieces of lead...


I placed about 10-12 grams in the tip of the nose with superglue, this was more then enough to get the nose down.


I noticed some google pictures that show yellow wires connected to the backside of the instrument panel,
so I used electric wire and painted those yellow, a small bit will be visible through the front canopy...


Clear parts ...


1 - I drilled a small hole through the rear-canopy for the antenna wire, this will help to glue it in place later.
2 - Yes, I still mask my canopies with Tamiya tape oop:
3 - All parts masked.


The nose panels and canopy were glued on.
Although this kit is a type Me262 A-1a/U5, I used the standard A-1a nose part as I prefer the look of the original design.
The original nose-part is still included in the kit.


I sanded the bottom of the wheels to give them the weight-look...


... And if you thought I wasn't going to use my wooden sticks for this project ... you thought wrong :smiling5:

Hi guys,
Here's another update :

I cut out circles to mask the intakes...


I sprayed on a black primer...


For some reason I started playing with the airbrush and added some sort of a 'pre-shading mottling effect' with white primer.
I'm not sure how much of this effect will be visible in the end though...




The wheel-well was over-sprayed in black too.


I masked the underside and sprayed Aluminium in the wheel-well, as Alan commented before.


Aluminium added...


Then I covered the wheel-wells with kitchen-sponge :smiling6:


Perhaps I can do some more airbrushing tomorrow...
