AGM-86 cruise missile

A while ago, I bought a set of 1:72 scale American cruise missiles from Modelcollect:

As a quick break from building Sherman tanks, I decided to stick one of these together, and opted for the AGM-86. First, here is what you get in the box:

The first photo is the sprues for the AGM-86, of which you get four (missiles, that is — not sprues ). The other photo shows the sprues for the AGM-109 Tomahawks and AGM-129s, of which you get three each; the photoetched bits are fins for the AGM-129s. However, all but one of each type are intended to be built folded up, and only one can be built in flight mode. If you want any more like that, you would have to build the wings yourself, as well as extended air intakes etc.

I don’t quite understand the logic of having two extra sprues with fins and air intakes for the AGM-86, nor of including the AGM-129 fins as etched bits. There is enough room on the sprues to add all these bits to the main ones.

As expected, it goes together quickly, there being only eight parts to the AGM-86:

Oddly, the air intake is a separate two-piece assembly, when they could just have been moulded integrally with the sides; the vertical fin is similarly separate for no obvious reason. Also, there is exactly one locating pin on this model, at the nose. A few more would have been nice, especially for the fins.

To tell the truth, I’m not sure … the box doesn’t really give any clues other than the artwork on the front, so I’ll have to do some research to find out how to paint it.
