I rather fancy building a Hurricane, one of my favourite aircraft, but disgracefully, there just is no decent new tool Hurricane in 1/32 scale, just an ancient Revell and some problematical short run kits. So what other options are there, no I’m not interested in a teeny little 1/48 so it’s over to 1/24.
There is the Airfix, a decent kit for its ancient vintage, it was the third release in the Airfix 1/24 series and was a real improvement on the Spitfire and 109 that preceded it. I remember it well having built it back ‘in the day’. But there is something newer from Trumpeter and I have not yet built one of their 1/24 kits so it has to be one of these. Reviews are good and it really looks like a Hurricane.
Some Googling found a Mk IIC and a Mk IID available, I have seen plenty of the former around on the web but few of the ‘D’. So a D it has to be.
The D was an attempt to benefit from the Hurricane’s stable gun platform and ruggedness to produce a tank killer. They put a pair of machine guns in the wings armed with tracers for aiming and strapped directly under it, below the wings, big powerful cannons. This, along with a Volkes filter for use in the desert, affected the aircraft’s performance but that hardly mattered as it’s mission was to kill tanks not engage in air to air combat.
So, it’s a Hurricane, not as we have seen it before but what’s not to like, Hurricane, desert camo, unusual configeration..... this is going to be fun.
Here is the box

Here is the aftermarket

It is a little disappointing to see how little 1/24 am there is. No choice of seatbelts other than those shown, not my favourites exactly. The canopy masks are vinyl, no Kabuki tape ones available so thats no great but will have to do. The i.p Is great though.
This is the scheme I will do doing.

I find it amusing how much care Trumpeter take over the packaging of their utterly useless decals. These will be binned, apart from the aircraft serial codes which I will use with a coat of liquid decal film, it is not worth even putting these in the spares box, so useless are they.

so, I will be using these instead.

This is a generic Hurricane set from which I will be able to make up the right markings. These, unlike the Montex masks, are Kabuki tape so will be much better to use. Maketar do produce a lot of generic masking sets offering a choice between vinyl and kabuki. Never pick vinyl, they just cannot be chamfered down into detail in the same way kabuki ones can and on curves can come away from the model. As I have this set I just might need to build another 1/24 Hurricane or two.....
If you want to paint on markings then you cannot go wrong stocking up on the generic Maketar sets.
The plastic looks good, nicely detailed but I found it a little oily, something I notice with Trumpeter. So I actually did what I usually do not do, washed the sprues in a sink of warm soapy water. I will still need to wipe the parts over before painting with some ipa to get rid of finger grease.

I was surprise as the kit does not seem to have many parts but the detail seems fine.
As usual, here is a shot of my bench, all cleaned up, set up for this build. The sprues are labelled and organised.....

I also made a bit of a start on the cockpit...

More to follow....
