Great work on those decals Allen and good luck with the next stage

Very good work Allen. The decals have been beaten into submission and look great. It really is the only way to do that pattern I think, and it has to be done as it’s so iconic to the subject. If you end up with any stubborn decal areas that won’t snug down pricking very fine holes in the decal with a sharp scalpel blade will let the micro sol in underneath and allow the trapped air out as the decal settles again.
You’ve got to give the Iwatta a go as well. It is honestly easier to use and clean than the Aztek, and does make it easier to produce fine lines and spray small areas.Comment

Well Youngerthan me, you have beaten the decal god into submission, and they do look the business. Had a think about your mottle camo on the fuselage - spray the base colour and then use a sponge to add the 'mottle'. Keep up the good work, and remember when out for the bottle digesting write 'Other Way Up' on the bottom of your boots....

Thanks Mick, but there are more to do and then work on the fuselage to get it painted. Then more work with the 'nasties'...

Yesterday, I finally tried out the Iwata and sprayed the black stripes on the rear wing. They were pretty easy to mask, but the flappy ribbing wasn't 100% aligned with the wing ribbing. Anyway, I mixed up a small batch of Tamiya X-1 flat black, 60-40 with IPA and gave the AB a try. It worked really well although, it is heavier than my Aztek and was weird to hold in my hand to use, with the air hose underneath, in the middle. After I sprayed the black, I immediately cleaned it for fear of screwing it up,
Only one little oopsy and that was the right outside black stripe, where I didn't get the masking right. Just my bad luck, as it's on the top side of the wing,
The underside isn't perfect either, but the paint went down good and there were no runs under the masking. The rest of the yesterday was spent pricking holes and dabbing M Sol on the wings, to get the decals to snuggle down flat on the ribbing...
Woke up this morning and took a look at the rest of the sheet of 'nasties',
There were still some big ones to apply, so I went at it. I did the fin crosses (27,28 & 33,34) first as they were 2 piece affairs and also seemed a nightmare to do. I eventually got them on after they broke into pieces, stuck to my fingers, to the tweezers, and one piece folding over and sticking to itself. Kept my cool and finally got them done. It was too early for a cold one, so I went on and added the crosses to the wings (30 & 12, 13, 22 & 25). No probs here and the nerves were back to normal in a flash!!! The results of my escapades,
I can live with this!!! Other than the fin, they're all straight and they line up on the top wings too. I got lucky (again) I guess, LOL!!!
That's it for tonight, time for bed. Have a good week and once again, thanks for looking in!!!

That, IMHO, is the greatest advantage of the Aztek: there isn’t a sticky-out bit in the middle of the airbrush getting in the way of holding it comfortably.Comment

Never really found that myself. I did find the heavier Iwata makes finer work easier though. The greater mass of the AB dampens movement inertia so it doesn’t wobble about so much in use.Comment

I find the thing that the air hose goes into, gets in the way of my fingers. I normally hold the airbrush in such a way that the upper side of my middle finger is against the back of it, and I don’t find that too comfortable. Not bad, but it would be much easier if that projection wasn’t there in the first placeComment

Now you mention it, I think he may have said something to that effect at some point. I had been thinking that a pistol-grip airbrush might suit me, but I would need an opportunity to try one first — I don’t want to be spending a couple hundred euros, only to find I don’t get along with it …Comment

Great progress Alan, the Halberstadt is really coming together.
I really like the look of the lozenge finish on German WW1 aircraft and the decals you’ve laid down really look the part. It seems that you’re going for the same scheme I will going for - great choice. Looking forward to seeing this complete your work thus far has been excellent and the finished model promises to be a real show stopper.
Cheers

I did see that accessories are sold to turn a normal airbrush into a pistol-grip one, I may want to see if I can find a cheapish one of those that fits an Iwata.Comment
