Spraying the fuselage camo!!! I'm scared...

Very long ago, there was an article in FineScale Modeler about how to spray lozenge camouflage using templates to repeat the pattern. I could dig it up if you want.

Thanks for the offer Jakko. I, myself have many years of FSM on hand. If you could remember the year, I might have the issue you mention. There is a Modeler in Denmark that also made a template for the naval lozenge camo and it seemed to work well too. Appreciate it!!!...

It’s the January 1989 issue, which has a picture of the Monogram model of the Vietnam Memorial statue (which I have in my stash, as well as photos I took of the real thing almost 25 years ago because I had it in my stash …) on the front:

Evening all and a Happy Easter too,

Did you ever have a day where the brain farts ruled? I have, and last Thursday was a doozy. I wanted to shoot a matt coat on the wings to seal the decals, so I could attach the rigging to the top wings. I mixed up a mix of Tamiya X-21 flat coat with some X-20A thinner and went at it. I tested it on my scrap plastic sheet first, and then shot the underside of the bottom wings. The first fart was when I remembered I hadn't masked the strut and rigging holes, so I stopped. Luckily, I had only sprayed the two pieces. I took a look at the two bottom wings that I had sprayed and we had this,


They looked like it was -30° in the booth...DOH!!!...The second fart was I had forgotten that the X-21 was to be mixed with their gloss paint colors to make them matt. It's not a matt coat like AV or other brands of matt. Ok, I figured I have to get rid of the frost and gently rubbed a finger over it and it rubbed off in a powdery dust. Cool!!! I used a stiff brush and a piece of damp paper towel to get rid of it. Lucky me, and the decals survived my brain fart. I cleaned the AB, and then later, went to Stammtisch...(beer needed)
I went back to the rigging, CA'd the one set of ends, and trimmed them. I also made the rigging between the main struts and CA'd them onto the tops of the struts,


Only one dried a bit wonky, but I can live with it. I purposely made one strut set with shorter brass tubing so I could remember their part number when attaching them. I had to remove the sprue bits to paint them and didn't need another fart.
This kit seems to have a never-ending count of small parts that need painting. So, I drove on with those,


The observer had a choice of grenades/bombs at his disposal to throw while in flight. The stick grenade rack held 10 of them. The 1.9kg bombs were held in a rack holding 4 or 6 of them. Each stick grenade has a data decal that has to be stuck on them. They are tiny, but actually have readable info on them. Too damn small for my optivisor to see what they say though. On with the nasty,


With Micro Set and Sol, I got them to settle on the handles. I have to knock off their shine and finish painting the grenade heads in the morn. I have to cut the bombs off of the racks as I only need 6 of them for the rack that mounts on the fuselage. A bunch of other little nonsense and painting has been going on too. One step forward, two steps back seems to be the story here lately...

Please Neil, don't be put off over a WnW's kit as they are great. The probs are not the kits' fault, but mine, the Bonehead who is building it!!! The little parts are for the particular plane you are building. Grenades, bombs, flares and such do take time to finish, but I think they will look ok when in place on her. I am still having fun my friend...

Not really stressed Dude 2, but felt like the village idiot. It cleaned off and now I can try it again. Stammtisch was needed as well as bowling on Saturday evening too!!! PM later...

Thanks Andy!!! That is very kind of you and Cohan. I'm sure he would be a big help and maybe bite me on the finger when I'm about to do something stupid. I think 1/32 might be a bit too large for him though, and the immigration laws here the pits!!!...

Late evening everyone,

After the kind offer of Cohan's help from Mr. Smiff, I decided to drive on and leave the brain farts behind me! I didn't get to shoot any matt on the wings yet but went about masking the fusillier. This was a PITA from start to finish!!!...It took the last 2 days of my time. Masking the tail over the white was the worst, as the damn AK tape wouldn't stick. I used some Saran wrap to cover the rigging and taped that down with the Ak. I carefully cut the tape with a sharp blade to the contour of the white paint. No probs, BUT, the tape kept lifting up when left for 10 minutes, even after burnishing it down, many times. I used tweezers to place it, with little contact with my fingers. PO'd, I went about masking the front end and making a cover for the motor and the contact points for the cowling pieces. I tried it with Saran wrap and it was useless. I cut out some thick paper, with lots of tape and blutac, Then I mixed up a batch of 1 part Tamiya XF-4 yellow green with 4 parts XF-55 deck tan (per instructions), with 40% IPA and got the job done, or so I hoped,


I took off the masking on the tail to see the results and it wasn't too bad. Only one tiny point on the white needs a dab. Now, after looking at the color after it had dried. I asked myself the €125.000 question...If the paint looks almost identical to Panzer dark yellow, why did I have to mix the batch of two colors???...Anyway,

Funny that the AK tape stuck where it wanted to and not where I wanted it. The rest of the parts needing a coat,


Note the tape over the radiator, left, on the upper wing piece. Stuck like there was no tomorrow. After the lozenge painting nonsense, it probably won't come off so I can paint the rad matt alu...I will leave the masking on the front of this too, till after the lozenge paint job is finished. Then gloss, decals and finally a matt coat on the whole deal. One down and 5 colors to go!!!...

More to come and have a great weekend! Think lozenge colors with brown, dk green, pale green, blue and mauve, with a few cold ones thrown in too...
