Great work Jim. The Buccanear is such an iconic, pretty and adaptable aircraft.

Lovely work thus far, and a very interesting discussion on the Vortex Generators.
Just a word of caution with this kit, I found on mine that the wing-fold isn't very strong. I've noticed over time that my wings have collapsed in on themselves slightly until the tips started to touch. I mean, Okay, I did build mine as a D and hung Martels from them, but just a warning none the less.Arnold Judas Rimmer BSc SSc

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for all you posts. My dad would have really enjoyed the discussion on the wing fence thingies. When he worked on the Buccaneer design team his area of special expertise was in fluid dynamics which I believe is all to do with airflow, lift etc.
Anyway despite time being tight, the dreaded DIY as "suggested" by SWMBO and my daughter having 'some little jobs' lined up for dad, I have finished the build. I have fitted the wheels although I would have preferred to leave them until after painting. Unfortunately the fitting of the wheels was very fiddly, although the fit was good, and I knew that I would not be able to fit the wheels later without damaging the paint work. The undercarriage doors will be fitted later.
The temperature is forecast to cool a little over the next few days so I should be able to get some primer airbrushed.
Thanks again for your support and again sorry for not acknowledging it earlier.Comment

I know the square root of naff all about aero dynamics or wing fences but I do know a good build when I see one mate.Comment

I'm so sorry, Jigs, uuhhh Jim, that I totally missed your build. I must say, you are up to your usual fine quality building skills Sir, and on such a tiny wing thingy kit too. Very nice Jim and I hope it cools off so you can shoot some primer. The heat is holding up a bunch of us...
Is it me, or does anybody else on the forum hear the theme song from the TV series "Flipper" playing in the background??? Must be the Bucc's tail fin causing it...

Just out of interest Jim, does the kit show/have the tiny little vortex generators on the upper leading edges of the wings? When working on them in training I always they always drew blood when scrabbling over the wings. (Never got to work on the aircraft after training).
It's coming on a treat, even 'naked' it looks every bit a Bucc!!!
Out of interest, Nimrod MR2’s also have wing fitted vortex generators. On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.
Coming soon: Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR2.
Just finished: Airfix 1/48 Stuka & Airfix 1/72 Sea King HC4.Comment

Thanks guys for your nice posts. A little more progress.
One issue was the potential problem of this sitting tail down. The instructions call for weight in the nose. Because I have made the nose cone folded I couldn't include weight as I doubt the hinge on the nose would take it. I intend to put this on a section of carrier deck (if I'm lazy it will be one from Coastal Kits) so decided that the nose wheel could be pinned to the base. I drilled and fitted a piece of wire.
The canopy was masked and fitted temporarily with tiny blobs of PVA. The wheel wells were masked and the whole lot sprayed with an MRP darkish grey.
I masked for the silver leading edges on the wings and the engine intakes. The canopy has been removed.
I used Vallejo Metal Color.
I painted the tyres and a yellow panel - don't know what it is or why it's yellow?
The FOD covers, the canopy and some other odds and sods were masked and painted.
Still a way to go but we're getting there.
Thanks again for looking in.Comment

Good solution with the pin. I suppose you could have gotten enough weight in front of and around the cockpit to keep the nose down, but that requires a good deal of planning if you want the nose cone folded, of course.Comment
