Hi, Me again,

Here is the updated results of the panel lines outcome. We bigger scale builders dont have the advantage of having all this detail done already so the true large scale builder has to create his own. You will see some pics that are pre rivit lines and some that have the rivit lines in red for ease of identification. I've done a count up on this one, it was started mid August last year and it has taken 491 hours to build so far. The P47 took 1800hrs in total, this is obviously a quicker build process.

This is awesome stuff! I got a question though. You say you bought this as a kit, but it seems to me you've made 99% of the bits yourself. Just what exactly did you get in the box when you bought it?

Did you ever see that special offer in the old "MAD" magazine? For your $4.99 or whatever it was, you got a cube of wood, a pocket knife, a picture and a set of instructions. The only instruction on them was: "Cut away everything that doesn't look like the picture." 'Cos that sounds a bit like what you got! lol

Hi Gern,

Well, the kit came with all the usual stuff basicaly, Ribs, formers, planking though it was short and canopy. Thats about it, i scrapped the original interior bits. Then there are the extras to purchase. Paint, fibreglass, resin, servos, retracts, radio gear, hinges, motors, speed controllers, batteries and the pilot figures that i modified. It adds up to quite a bit when you get down to it, the batteries alone are £200.00 then all the other bits i suppose equates to around £600 all told.

Its an expensive hobby building at this scale and you never recover your cost of labour... but eh, what the hell i enjoy it.

i do tend to feel a little out of place on here at times as you guys build at a lot smaller scale than i do. Im not all that sure that this is the kind of things that you guys are interested in. I havent had any neg feed back as yet so ill just keep going until i hear otherwise.

Andy thats a riviting build,had to say it lol,honestly that is really looking good do you see small white dots everywhere you look for hours after a session or what?

You are right, it is very riviting work and you get stuck in to it lol. I see a snow storm after looking at it for too long. I will post some more pics later tonight and you can see the finished result.

Andy ! You have nothing to worry about. Before I clikked to post this, there had been 5,435 hits on this build. That is a huge interrest. Its even got me looking at large scale plane kits in wood! (A Spitfire, go figure!)

You probably know this, but when doing PVA rivets on boats, I tend to mix a really shock colour in with the PVA. I found that once dry, PVA is pretty hard to see, and with a nice bright colour mixed in with it, you can see if you have missed any before you start to paint! Silver paint could also do it, and have the added bonus of after painting you could swip a finger across to expose the bare metal rivets here and there.

Unfortunatly the rules regarding RC aircraft in Denmark limit things abit. If you have a model over seven kilo you need a licence, to be in a club and have liability insurance. (thats probably a good idea).

Hi,

Another chapter closes. We really are getting close to the end now. The riviting is complete, only little bits to do now like the retract bays detailing and then its onto paint again. Could get the paint complete this weekend ready for insignia and numbering and nose art... thats if i dont get a call and say that we are shooting, lots of pigeon about still.

Anyway, here are the final riviting pics, it is hard to see some of the rivits as they dry out but this will be enhanced on the weathering process.

Hi Ian,

great tip with the paint mixing in the glue, thanks i had honestly never thought of that. I use a mix of water and Tightbond, will this still work also will it go off in the bottle if i leave it over night or not?. Thanks also for the comments, much appreciated.
