Graham, I have had Canopy PE before but on my 1/32 SU-27 Flanker B and my MIG 29M, but the 1/48 which is the Phantom scale is a real eye waterer. I have attached a photo of the Canopy etc beside a Pound coin, see if you can see the mirrors. Cheers Derek

Derek mate i've been following this and it looks sweet the cockpit detail with the ejector seats attached looks very nice indeed. Nice paint job well done mate

Hi Derek,

There's a guy named Willard Wigan who specialises in microscopic carvings (he's done a recognisable Snow White and 7 dwarves in the eye of a needle!). He uses the hair from a fly's leg as his paintbrush. Are you using summat similar to get this kind of detail in 1/48? That's amazing stuff.

This will be my last posting for this Aircraft in the ‘Under Construction’ section of the Forum. I will post some photos of the finished Aircraft tomorrow.

Had a problem fitting the Flame Tube, see Photo’s 30 and 31 for how to rectify. I also added some Bombs and reshaped the Pylon to take them, so that the Aircraft was as close as possible to the original Photo taken at RNAS Lossiemouth in 1969.

Conclusions: - Overall a nice kit, the cockpit let it down, but although the Aires replacement was a big improvement, it needed a LOT of work to fit, see earlier in this posting for details. The Panel Lines and Rivet details were nicely done, and overall a good fitting Model. The framing indentations on the Cockpit Canopies were very faint in places, so it made it difficult to mask-off in places.

Painting: - For the underside after priming with Tamiya White Fine Surface Primer, I used Xtracrylix White FS17875, very nice paint, thinned it slightly with some tepid tap water and it airbrushed extremely well, dried to a satin finish and seems to be more scratch resistant than other Acrylics. For the Topsides, the Kit specified Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color H333 – Extra Dark Sea Grey, which I bought but for me it was more like Tyre Black, and have been using it for that purpose. Instead I used Tamiya 4-Parts XF-24 Dark Grey + 1-Part XF-18 Mid Blue thinned 50% with Tamiya Thinner, airbrushed without a Primer. The front panel of the Canopy was tinted on the inside surface with Tamiya Clear Blue X-23 + Clear Blue X-25, I made it a little too dark.

Decals: - After brushing the model with Micro Gloss, the Decals went on well with Micro Set, but it took two coats of Micro Sol to bed them into the panel lines etc, but they still didn’t settle in some areas. The model was then sprayed with Humbrol Aerosol Satin 135. The nose was brush painted with Lifecolor LC 27 Matt Clear.
