    Update:

Sorry for he wait guys, i'm not the quickest on a build as it's a case of squeezing bits in here and there.

Was painting some bike model bits with Metalcote polished aluminium and had a bit left in the cup, hmmm, I thought, the underwing wells for the undercarriage, that'll do nicely, so I sprayed em, had more than I thought in the cup and was about to decant back into the tinlet and thought, hmmm, leading edges of wings etc so i might scratch through a bit to show aluminium underneath, so I sprayed em, still more left in the cup, (I swear I didn't mix that much, the coverage of this stuff is pretty good, i reckon one tinlet could just about cover a small family car).

Anyway, long story slightly less long, here we have a fully primed Typhoon in alu metalcote.

Looking at it and pondering the next step while it dryed enough to buff up, 48hr curing then sprayed today.

Now pay attention folks, this is what happens if you get hiccups while spraying or thin your paint with fine grit!

No seriously, I'd been wracking my brains to utilise the undercoat as best as possible and not wanting the bulk to be wasted i remembered reading an article ina mag about salt weathering, a-ha I thought, (they'd been on the radio earlier and take on me was just stuck in my head), so last night as i'm about to go to bed, a quick detour to the kitchen for the salt tub and spray bottle and one crusty model follows.

Now I still have the band on the tail and ID stripes to mask and paint (camo was done freehand, with a 0.5mm needle / nozzle too so quite chuffed), as it can only be masked once. After that I can chip off the salt and see what occurs.

You may note a missing cannon tip on the starboard wing, they are a PITA, i think i've broken off and re-glued all of them at least once, one twice so far, that ones glued and setting, again, hopefully will get the band and stripes tomorrow and clearcoated for the decals this weekend.

MSM, no figures handy for that Dio, if you could supply an Angelina Jolie one with full leather option please? Size is 1:1, i'll be eagerly waiting by the letterbox.

You might at least have waited until he'd finished! I want to see the results of his experiment with the salt. If Ang does turn up it might be weeks before he's back in the right frame of mind!

Have you taken that salt off yet? There looks to be quite a bit of it! I've never done the salt thing so I'm intrigued to see how it works.

            Cheers

Not yet Steve, been one of those days, non stop at work then held up picking the missis and wee one up, then grab dinner, then had to build the little fellas new bicycle, (that was like a kit in itself), just gotten him to bed with his story, (late but it's the weekend), and now checking here before I dive in the shower, it's been so warm up here the past couple of days I feel like i could be melting, (not complaining mind, it's lovely after all the lousy weather).

Have to mask and paint the stripes yet so needs to go over the crust as I can only do it once, as soon as the stripes are done i'll strip the rest of the salt and clearcoat it, I think I have gone overboard but i'll see what happens when i take it off.

The article I read was a heavily weathered JU52 floatplane conversion so that one was deliberately OTT but you never know, this Typhoon could have seen active service on a temporary beach airstrip with skeleton crew who had an aversion to cleaning. If I like the result I can always look at refining it on future models, while it's wet you can shift it about quite a bt though on this I simply misted the water and shook the salt over it.

Just masked and sprayed the white tonight for the stripes, (that's fun, masking over painted salt, burnishing it down and trying not do disturb it too much while still attempting to get a straight edge)

No piccies yet but will get some tomorrow when I prep and mask for the black parts.

OK guys, latest shots, ID stripes painted, salt off with the aid of a toothpick and toothbrush.

After the pics I was about to airbrush coat it with xtracrylix gloss and then decided to do something I haven't done before.

Brush paint Klear as I'm not in the mood for decalling tonight I don't need a quick drying coat, it seemed to go OK, will see what it's like when dry but being so runny it self levels well.

One thing I noted, it started dissolving the acrylic coat underneath, only slightly but nonetheless and I was probably being a bit more vigorous with the brush than strictly necessary, guess that answers whether the new Klear dissolves in itself?

I know it's way OTT, but I have to say I like the effect, could certainly be useful for a scrap car scene, or potentially fun for a battle scarred armour dio for the tank fans.

I'll have a go at this one again but make it more subtle.

That is certainly one chipped aircraft. OK, may be a tad OTT but hats off to you for having a go especially on a 1:72!

That's worked very well, thanks for showing us. I think it shows the effect very well. On a slight tangent I wouldn't worry too much about beautiful straight edges on invasion stripes as there is plenty of evidence to show they were hurriedly and far from perfectly applied at unit level on aircraft involved on D-Day. Ones that arrived subsequently had the markings applied at a higher level (MUs for the RAF) and tended to have a better job done on them.

                              Cheers

                                Hi M1ks

I like the technique and now you've tried it you know what to expect and how much to apply, where, and how to get it off. All good stuff.

                                Cheers
