Italeri Hawk T. Mk I

Well I spose I'd better do some thing! The winner is

the new Italeri Hawk in 1/48 scale

It can be finnished as one of four versions, I will be doing the 4th flight training squadron at Vally in 2001. The last aircraft flown by 74-Tiger squadron.

Four sprues of cleanly molded light gray palstic. Clean crisp and almsot flash free.

One sprue clear with the canopy and windscreen. Again crisply molded and not to thick. There is NO seam down the middle and has the squiggly cord thingies finely molded. (are they heat cables or canopy charges to blow the lid?)

There is also a small PE sheet with both insruments and harnesses. As usual for Italeri, they are a bit on the thick side. Fine for the panels but a bit of a bugger for things that should be bent. They tend to bend at the wronge place.

Also typical for Italeri there are no pilot figures included. :-(

Panel lines and rivits are nicely done and the tyres are weighted so no need to melt these ones :-)

You know, I have often been put off the Hawk because of its links with the Red Arrows (sorry guys but I am not a fan of formation flying which, though skilful and very clever, I do not find remotely entertaining) however, it is a nice looking aircraft. Given that it will be one of the few aircraft the UK has in service after the Harriers go, final flights this month I believe, the Hawk may be one to look at. I know they did one in BoB colours to fly alongside the Spitfire, that would make an interesting one.

Look forward to seeing this develop Ian, is it a completely new (tool) kit? Would be interested in your comments about it.

spent a weeks holiday in august almost entirely watching hawks at valley,our caravan was only a mile or so away.would love to make a model of the 2010 display hawk but would have to find or make some decals because i dont trust my painting enough yet

Hi Graham I'm not sure if it is a new tooling actually! A quick look at their web site at kit nr 2669 will bring the kit up. The red arrows version has nr2677 both are fairly recent kits, that mush I know but as to being 100% a new tooling? The detail is good though and the lines/rivet are not ott.

A good look at the instructions and the sprues dont give any clues either, no dates anywhere to be found!!!

So long as the surface detail is OK, you should be fine. I see from the box it comes with PE to, anything interesting there?

I've narrowly avoided this in my last few visits to the LHS but I'll be interested to see what becomes of this. Ian the squiggles are canopy detcords!

Andrew: Whats that like, is it the Unionjack job. Looks bloody good that one.

Graham: Instuments main and side panels, harnesses. As mentioned in the first post. Pay attention at the back!!

Stewart: Detcords. thats the buggers. Just was not 100%!

So what colour are the harnesses in modern British Aircraft. I was thinking orange.....

So far the cockpit has fallen together quite well and the decals for the dials actually line up with the holes in the panel!!! Well Done Italeri!

Well its sunday, and has been piddleing down with rain all day, so I hid in my cave and got on with the hawk.

I must say that over all the fit is super and in fact I have on used any filler at all! The seams on the fuselage are almost invisible just after a quick scrap with a blade and a polish with the polishing stick. I will need to use some filler at the wing root if the dry fit is any thing to go by, but that might of been my doings, smoothing off the sprue attachments!!!

There was the option of doing the flaps up or down, so I went with the down, also the air brake box will need a bit of filler, and that will be in the deployed possition.

The usual problem with the intake vents was minimal and again no need for filler, so Italeri have earned a few extra browny points from me today! However there is a desperate shortage of locators, where they have to meet the fuselage, and the seam runs right through a panel! Not smart!

As the paint job on this bird is nice shiny black I was hoping that I could avoid filler as it can nearly always be seen under the paint. S'pose I will just have to try a bit harder on this one!

I also got the PE harnesses put in the seats, I went for a nice safe buff for the straps!

Well I had a day off and what happens the cable goes down! No Telly. NO INTERNET!! Oh dear!

Still, i got the Hawk almost ready for paint.

Not To happy with the fit of the canopy, but abit of sanding and shaving got it in place, sort of. All primered up and awaiting a coat of nice shiny black:
