1/72 Airfix CAC Boomerang

While I waited for the varnish to dry on my P-47, and continued to ponder the scheme for my Ju52, I pulled this little kit from the ancient stash and decided to start it while I was on a roll. I know a few of these have been made in recent times, so there was a lot of research already done, so thanks for sharing that information on your build threads guys, particularly Tony. His thread is here: http://www.scale-models.co.uk/planes-helicopters/15468-airfix-1-72-cac-boomerang-under-construction.html

I noticed from your thread Tony, that your Boomerang had a reasonable fit. Must have been a lucky draw there, because this one was not pleasant to fit together.

Ready for filling and sanding. I was perhaps premature in putting my Aussie in the cockpit so early, but he did survive the sanding.

The machine gun ports were missing. I decided to heat up the end of a pointed file end and make my own.

Filled, sanded and standing on its own feet. The cannons were a nightmare, but I managed to rescue them.

That was day one complete. Next is a bit of masking, primer and then paint time. I will be brushing with Humbrol enamels. I will be doing the dark foliage green scheme as Tony did, and referring to his research, I will not apply the light colour to the underside.

    Thanks for looking!

Nothing like the bits Tony or Trey added to theirs, they were real detailed builds and I was reluctant to do mine after those very high standards. But I have to reduce the stash, SWMBO has an eye on it and I can't expand it.

Thanks Tony, I will use the Bronze Green 75 Humbrol as instructed I think, it looks okay so far. No pics today, I have found a few more things I need to tidy up on the underside. I'm not sure if it's just me but the newer Humbrol paints seem to be a lot thinner, which is both good and bad. Good because it is easy to apply smoothly and I imagine therefore to mix for an airbrush, bad because it is so thin it requires many coats by hairy stick.

The bronze green is a good match joe . Although i havent personally had experience of the new humbrol paints ,ive heard a few tales of them being thinner than before . cheers tony

A very nice start on what looks like a small ill-fitting kit Joe

All the filling and sanding was completed yesterday, the underside now looks respectable at least. The main paint work is finished. The exhaust has been painted and fitted and the frame now has a spinner and propeller. I left it for a day to let everything dry well as it has been rather humid here. Should get a coat of varnish on today and some decals, and if all goes well some weathering. Work will get in the way for the next three nights, so it may take another few days to complete.

                      Gloss varnished:

A few hours later, decals applied and a second gloss coat applied:

This must be the first kit I have built that can actually sit inside its box!

Nearly there, but some subtle weathering, flat coat and glazing will have to wait until tomorrow at least. Thanks for looking again.

Cracking work on a poor fit kit mate.
