    Monogram 1/48 Skyraider

I tried posting a build of this kit a few weeks ago.It went horribly wrong when i tried to add photo's amoungst the text.No doubt due to my poor computer skills. So,just for a laugh i thought i'd try again. The kit is one i bought whilst i was working out in the Middle East in the early nineties. Its an old kit moulded in dark brown plastic for some strange reason.I decided to sand off all the raised panel lines and scribe the detail back on.The kit went together ok although i noticed the rear fuselage/fin area is warped on my kit.Just have to live with that.I'm currently at the painting stage and am doing it in the kit paint scheme. This is a Vietnam war 'Sandy' which escorted helicopters used to rescue downed aircrew. As you can see i've used the card and blue tack method for spraying the camouflage patern.Done the wings and tail plane first. Will tackle the fuselage paint next.Im going to do some weathering on this one and when i've done a bit more i will post some more photo's.

Thanks Trey.Ive been building factory finish models for years but am going to have a go at weathering this one.Ive picked up a few tips on this forum. So now to put them into practise.I was hoping to use Florymodels dark wash but its out of stock at the moment.Or maybe i should use the sand or light dirt wash?.

Hi dave, the skyraider looks superb so far, kudos for re-scribing the panel lines too , for their time these monogram kits were very good and can still be made into excellent models as you have proved, keep it up , looking forward to seeing it in the full camo, cheers tony

Thanks Tony.I seem to get more pleasure out of making something half decent out of these old kits.Modern kits are great but i think the only skill involved is in the painting and finishing , unless your adding resin and PE parts that is.Last year i built a 1/48 Monogram A26 Invader. Its a brilliant kit with full interior detail including bomb bay and bombs and perfectly clear transparencies.Only negative is the raised panel lines.Wish i'd scribed that one now.Ive got a P61,Typhoon,Kingfisher and Mosquito from the same manufacturer in my stash. Will get round to making them one day!.Taken nearly 20 years to get round to doing the Skyraider!.

Careful though dave, the ones you mention are excellent but they do have some really old moulds too, like the FW190 i did for the first Group Build, it had virtually no cockpit and no wheel wells whatsoever , but i enjoyed bashing it into shape! I must admit that i have always wanted the p61 and dont tell anyone but im looking out for a devastator at the cosford show!! Come on the oldies!!! (kits i mean!! ) cheers tony

Think i built that FW190 once.Didnt it have a mixture of green and black sprues?.The Typhoon is very basic.Ive also got a Tamiya (or Hasegawa) car door version that i intend building along side it.My trouble is im already planning my next build before the current one is finished. Then when that ones done ive changed my mind about the next build!

Have a look at the under construction thread in spring 2010 group build section and the completed thread ,its probably the same kit, cheers tony http://www.scale-models.co.uk/completed/9879-hermann-grafs-fw-190a-5-monogram-1-48-yak-face.html

I can see why you are pleased with that. You made a damn good job of it. Well done.

I can also agree with your thoughts on some of the older kits. You have to put more effort into them and the resulting model is much more rewarding because of it.

Great looking build Dave, the exhaust stains are fine and look right to me. As for the bottom you could dirty it up more and that would tone down the panel lines a bit. Nice work painting the yellow stripes must have been a pain. Great looking Spad that I would be proud to have on my shelf

Finally finished it.I wanted to get away from my usual factory fresh look so had a go at making this one a bit dirty. As i had spent time rescribing the panel lines i decided to highlight these. I brushed black and brown paint mixed with thinners along the lines and removed the excess with a cloth.Think it looks a bit too dark on the underside. The exhaust stains were my third attempt.I found wiping the mistakes off highlighted more detail.I stil dont think they look right.I used black paint and i think stona said in one of his posts 'dont use black!'.The decals were 20 years old Monogram originals. Not the best decals when new.Needed quite a bit of microsol/microset to get the tail numbers to settle down properly. The yellow fuselage stripes broke up when i tried to apply them to the model. So i had to mask these and paint them by hand.I bought some Florymodels washes from the shop and tried the dark dirt wash out on the undercarriage bays.Anyway,im pleased with the finished model .I'd like your constructive criticism/coments please.
