Here's the bomber c/w matt coat and unmasked. For Laurie here's the canopy as it was unmasked. A little bit of tidying up will be done with a tooth pick and I'll also remove some traces of the glue from the masking with a cotton bud and alcohol followed by another cotton bud moistened with Klear. I won't attempt to touch up any paint in this scale
Steve
Missed this one Steve a lot of things on my plate in the last 14 days.
OK Steve if I send you my Merlin clear bits you can have a go at them. Deal ? The bomber's window bit looks good. I actually used 1mm tape around this & it is the very devil the most difficult part, for me, of the whole model. Also probably as important as most of the rest as your eye is drawn to it.
Thanks for the Parafilm & will practice until perfect ?
Like your camouflage top colours. Take it looking at them that you lightened these up from the real colours ?
Colin that is a great idea with the "GritColin". Should have thought of that. Recently been thinking how I could roughen up the framework. PS Airfix provide the cracks in the windows free of charge.
Laurie, I did lighten the colours. I started with the White Ensign colours for the Dark Earth and Dark Green and lightened both with white by a considerable margin. I couldn't tell you exactly how much as I'm very unscientific about it I'm afraid! I'd guesstimate about 15% white for the green and maybe 20% for the earth. After spraying the neat colour over the panel lines I tone it all down with an overspray of a less lightened (maybe 10%) version of the colour. It's all very approximate, just so that it looks okay.
I didn't use White Ensign's very good 'Night' colour on the under sides, because I didn't have any in the draw. It's just matt black, again considerably lightened with white.
Here's the Lancaster done. A big thanks to Roman for the kit which he sent me as a generous and unasked for 'thank you' for a mere bottle of the old style Klear which I was able to get for him.
These are just some snapshots, literally, which I was able to take whilst SWMBO has her hair done. I'm not supposed to be in the model room for the next few days
I never intended to build this into a little diorama, which is obviously still a work in progress though with the end in sight. If this thread should be moved to another sub-forum then please feel free to do so.
Wow. Excellent job Steve, the muted/faded colors work really well and I really like the subtle fading on the black. Can't see from the low angle shots; did you add exhaust staining?

I did
Terrible photo, the light is fading fast here in not so sunny Birmingham (it was quite nice earlier) and the colours look rather odd. It gives an idea of the staining though.
I didn't want to overdo it as the diorama will be 'bombing up' not 'coming home' I'm guessing that they didn't wash these things down after every mission, particularly during a busy period.
Great model Steve very nice indeed. Like the background looks the real thing. Clever you have arranges the background to look in the distance. Seems you have achieved this with an undulating foreground horizon. Looks good.
Just one thing. I hope you are going to add the antenna rigging & aerials etc .
To me a model is not complete with out them. Not a crit. just a hope
Don't worry Laurie, I'll add the antenna wires right at the end when there's less chance of me breaking them. At some point I've got to arrange a 4000lb HCB on the wires hanging out of the bomb bay at exactly the right height to match the outstretched arms of one of my figures
........should be fun, but will involve working on the bottom of the model
BTW I'm flattered that you think I did some clever positioning of the background. Honestly I just Blu-Tac it to a board behind the model, stick the model on a grass mat in front and snap away. Any artistic effect is entirely coincidental!
I will make a base for the diorama. It will be a concrete pan of the 120'-150' variety with a typical 50' access way. There are obvious reasons, as evidenced by the current weather, why you wouldn't want to park a thing the size and weight of a Lancaster on grass
YesI have my Lancaster & Wellington on hard stuff.
As you are building a diorama this may interest you. http://www.airfix.com/shop/new-for-2014/military-vehicles/a03311-wwii-raf-vehicle-set-172/ Airfix & out next year one of their brand new ones. If the Merlin is anything to go by it will be well above their old standard.
