I have now completed the axle and fairing. The wheels are held in place by 4 collets supplied with the kit, not only does this look crude but there are 2 collets missing. There are one for each side of the wheel and nothing to stop the axle from traveling left or right through the struts. Very poor in my opinion. Therefore something had to be done to resolve this unsightly issue. Below are my versions of the wheel spaces and stops.

Asyou can see the axle fairing is now in place and the correct scratch built clamps that hold it in place.

And here is a pic of the bolt that travels through the strut, there are 4 of these.

And finally for this post a look at the pre-painted spats.

    More to come soon.

    Cheers

    Andy

Those legs are looking real good. Spats? never seen them in a S.E.5a before.

Thanks Ian, appreciate your comments. Im not sure if spats is the right name for these as they look like spats but dont go over the wheel they are at the side of the wheel and cover the bottom of the legs. Not sure why but they are there so ill build them in. Perhaps someone will enlighten me as to what they are called.

            Cheers

            Andy

Oh! I'm with you now. I was thinking Wheel spats. my bad. I now know what they are, they are the covers where the axle goes through the legs..... Fairings!

Spats / fairings / covers ? whatever they be .... still say thats a nice bit of glassing !!!!!

The whole things looking really sharp, there's an almost artistic contrast between the wood and metal in what you've done so far.

You post and say you've stuck piece "A" to piece "B" ... but when you look at the photo's you can see what work has gone into actually doing it, there's endless little extras that catch your eye every time.

Don't think it'll just be a scale model when you complete it Andy...i think it'll be close to a static piece of art to be honest.

Hi Andy. What a journey this build has taken everyone on and what a fantastic aircraft you are building. I use the word aircraft rather than a model because it is just that, a scale aircraft. And on that note Iam going to make a suggesion. I know that you have said that you dont want to fly this plane for risk of damaging it and I fully understand your reasons but I once built a small spitfire with a friend who was terminally ill and he passed away shortly before it was completed. I finished it off and felt at that time that I wanted to preserve it and not fly it. However as the years passed I kept looking at the Spit and thought "It just has to fly even if its just one flight". So I fitted it out and flew it. After a couple of short flights I stripped everything out and now just have it as a keepsake but I know its flown. I would love to see some pictures of this plane in flight, it would be amazing. Like I say Andy, I fully respect your decision but from one model pilot to another I would say "Let it fly"

Thanks CDW. Im glad you see all of the effort going into this and not just the finished product. I could do a frame by frame pic show but there would be hundreds more. I agree with you on the static part to. I think every oportunity i find i will exhibit it and show it off with pride. As time goes on... i am convinced all the more that this beauty should never leave the ground, it wasn't my original intention but you can be assured it is now.

Thank you again for your kind words.

Perhaps one day it will fly Steve but not in the very near future or even the distant one. Im only learning at the moment and i would be the only person to fly it i assure you. With that in mind i would like to have quite a few years under my belt before i even think about getting her up in the air.

                            Cheers

This continues to be a facinating thread Andy.
