Another hour's decal application tonight sees the forward pannier done. The instructions are good but reference to the real thing is best. Studying photos of the real thing also highlight some of the flaws in this kit.

I have been wanting to get into my 1/48 Dauntless for a while now that I have got some builds off my workbench. I will be away to Exeter this week for work so it will be coming with me with the intention of filling in my downtime in the hotel. Between now and then though, I had another marathon decal session tonight on this and I am still only half way through.
The upper wings are done except the no step footprint decals as I think the instructions are wrong and I want to verify their position. I've made a start on the underside of one wing with the servicing stencils and also on the right hand aft fuselage by the APU bay. It's not until you get up close with this kit that you start to see some pretty disappointing errors in the position of certain panel lines etc.
The APU bay door is awful while the retro launcher tube is nearer the tail plane instead of being much further forward where it can be loaded and operated by the crew (in reality, by the turn of the century the retro launchers had been removed from MR2's but the tube was still there).
The engine bay doors are lacking any great detail and there are no camera doors. At some point in the future I will continue with the other Nimrod kit I have started but I'm beginning to look at Eduard's etched brass detailing set to improve the build.

I now have a 1/72 scale model of a 60KVa Houchin power set for this aircraft in rest and white metal from AIM available from Hannants; it's pricey!

Here's a photo of the 1/72 scale 60 KVa Houchin I got to go with this Nimrod. It is a resin body and white metal wheels, axles, tow bar etc.

I had another airbrushing session yesterday, I don't have a permanent set up so I do spraying in batches and is one of the reasons that I have more than one build on the go at a time. Anyway, I got my 60KVa coated in Tamiya NATO Green and then varnished ready for the decals from Kingfisher Models. I still need to pick out the smaller details like the handles and fire extinguisher.
I have also made progress on the base, this is just a cheap picture frame from Wilko's with a piece of concrete coloured mounting card to represent the bay's at RAF Kinloss. There will be a grass verge and some other airfield clutter nearby.

My 60 KVa has had the red of the fire extinguisher and the reflectors painted and the fuel filler painted yellow with decals applied for the yellow stripes. The drawback with this 60 is that there are no decal sheets provided so I used the Kingfisher Models RAF yellow stripes which are okay, but all RAF GSE has a type code of unique letters and numbers for an individual piece of GSE from step ladders to power sets so I cannot replicate these.
The Kingfisher Models decal instructions say they are on clear backing paper but I found this to not be the case so they had to be trimmed right to the edge of the yellow.
Tyres are painted and ready to fit when dry.

Yet another marathon session of decal application for XV235 tonight and I've done as much as I and my eyes can stand with this. Most of them were done on the tail plane and MAD boom which were a bit of a pain and there aren't enough to replicate the static discharge strapping.
After a coat or two of varnish the aerials, landing gear and AAR probe can go on.
Nearly done.
