Tamiya 1/72 AH-1W Super Cobra

    HI all

I am building this as part of the Bell Huey Single Type Group Build on Britmodller.

    The Plan

To build the kit OOB with photo etch seat belts. It will be painting with enamels, mostly with acrylics mostly used for small detail and some weathering. I do not intend to paint it in the three tone camo scheme, but just in the standard grey scheme that is mostly seen. I have not decided yet.

    Kit Details (from scalemates.com)

    Brand:

    Tamiya

    Title:

    Bell AH-1W Super Cobra

    Number:

    60708

    Scale:

    1:72

    Type:

    Full kit

    Released:

1993 | Rebox (Changed box only)

Kit History: The kit is a rebox of Italeri kit no: 160 released in 1987

Well will work on this over the weekend. I hope you all like the post. All comments are welcome.

Well looks like I broke my Airbrush Nozzle before I even started.

But thats not gona stop me now.....

Before the airbrush there was ......the...... brush

Brush painted the cockpit, and added photo etch seat belts.

    Fuselage assembly started as well

    All done for the weekend

Now as my Airbrush is out of action till I get a replacement nozzle, which will take a while, so doing the camo scheme is out. I will paint this using a single Tamiya AS spray can. I have to find the correct colour first.

Because of the broken airbrush the proposed scheme has been simplified to this one

I hope you all liked the update. All comments welcome.

Oooh, I do like gun ships!! :x

          Wouldn't mind doing a 1/48 at some time....... 9_9

I built a lil' 1/72 Airfix Gazelle for my son some time ago, and found it quite small... :S

Is the Cobra manageable or is it small and fidly? :|

            Thanks all,

Gavin I found the cobra to be a much larger size than I was expecting and very easy to manage. But then again I have built a few 1/72 models now.

Here is the latest update. I have used Taniya spray cans and brush painted on some Tamiya Enamels.

Gaps filled using Tamiya white putty

            Cockpit fully assembled

            Blades ready for paint

Canopy masked off - this took me one day almost.

Here it is painted with Tamiya AS paint. The blades were painted with Tamiya TS spray paint - Black

Will do detail painting up this week and then maybe do some light weathering and apply decals. Then do up the weapons and finish off with a matt coat.

Hope you all liked the update. All comments welcome.

                  Thanks Ralph and Ian.

Here is the next build update, I have done up the weapons, weathering and applied decals. I have done the panel lines using a pencil as the kit has raised panel lines.

Here are the weapons painted up

Now as this kit has raised panel lines, I used a pencil - very sharp,, to create lines, by drawing along the raised panel lines. I did this all across the fuselage. In case I made a mistake I just rubbed it off with a licked finger.

Here it is with decals on

Now will let the decals settle in and then seal the model in a matte coat. I will also attach the weapons then. Finally I will remove the mask from the canopy and hopefully there is no paint bleed!

I've had to do all this without my airbrush so am very happy with the current result. Also this is my first time doing panel lines on a kit with raised details so happy that I got it right with a pencil.

I hope you all liked the update. All comments welcome.

                      Thanks Ralph!

Here is the final update. I have matte coated it, and applied all the weapons to it as well. I also removed the canopy mask and happy to see a clear canopy underneath.

Here are the pictures before I do up a reveal post. The matte coat is still drying in these pictures.

I've  had alot of fun with this build, good fun using spray paints, and working with raised panel lines. I will do up a reveal post somtime tomorrow or over the weekend.
