    Captive 109s

These were a couple of quick builds of the HobbyBoss 1/72 Bf109E and 109G-6 in captured markings, based on profiles/photos in the Kecay book. The kits are OK and fit together very well, but there are a few inaccuracies and the detail is basic. I was especially disappointed in the canopy framing on the 'G' which was much too heavy. For the sidewall detail on the Emil I made sidewalls in my drawing program, printed them out on an inkjet and pasted them to the cockpit sides, they look pretty convincing through the thick canopy

A couple of really intersting models. The cockpit walls have worked very well, what a great idea.

An interesting question for anyone out there, probably right up Steve (Stona's) alley, why would they put a swastika over the top of the british fin markings on the Emil?

After it was first captured AE479 wore French tricolour markings. RAF colours were applied after handover to the RAF in May 1940 and was subsequently tested at A & AEE at Boscombe Down. It was sent to the United States in April 1942 and the reversed swastika was applied at that stage. Unsure why, but you can safely bet that flying anything in British skies at that time with any German markings on it would have been a very dangerous occupation.

Excellent builds Mike and as usual the finish on both is flawless, so strange seeing those markings on those airframes !
