41(F) Sqn in 1/48 - Jaguar GR1a

Hi all;


Well, here is the latest addition to my ever-growing 41(F) Sqn collection. This is the Airfix (also Heller or Revell) 1/48 Jaguar GR1a. I think I used more resin replacement parts than I used from the box - well, not quite, but...!! Neomega resin cockpit, Pavla seat, Paragon flaps and slats, Paragon cannon bulges and flare dispensers, resin exhausts, SAC white metal undercarriage, resin wheels, metal nose probe. Finished as the jet painted to mark the Sqn's 75th Anniversary in 1991 at RAF Coltishall, which is when I was on the Sqn.

Well, I've only really got one more in the stash to build - a Blue Max Sopwith Snipe. But, it's limited-run, and a biplane, so I've been putting it off! That said, 41 Sqn did use a captured FW190A as a hack (coded EB-?) in 1945, so I think I should do that. Also, one of my Spitfires could do with re-doing. Oh, and I see there's an Adler DH-5 on ebay! Blimey - I thought I was nearly finished!

The general colour and tone looks magnificent.

Very well finished Andy.


I like the way you have achieved the panel lines with the shading on the side of the panel line. Assume this is post shading. If it is it is not easy work I have found and you have achieved a very nice effect. Gives a soft effect to the panel line rather than just neat lfilling the panel line.

That's a cracker I always liked the jag and you've done a great job on that

Laurie - it is post-shading; I always use that method with dark colours because they tend to cover up pre-shading. That said, I did do a pin wash with oils afterwards into the panel lines themselves.

Beautiful work Andy. You must have researched all the aircraft and Squadron details to the point you could write a book I bet. Love the finish you have achieved on this Jaguar, a great addition to your 41(F) Squadron collection

Absolutely beautiful finishes and shading. It just goes to show that post shading is not something we should forget, as you suggest, especially with darker finishes. I really like the unusual red on top of the fuselage, it certainly sets the aircraft apart from the normal camoglage schemes. The comparisson with the real picture clearly shows just how well you have nailed this model.

Thanks Richard; the red spine and fin were to celebrate the Squadron's 75th Anniversary in 1991 - red and white are the Squadron's colours (as you can see from the Sqn badge on my avatar). 100th Birthday next year!


Joe - the books have already been written - not by me, I hasten to add, but by Steve Brew, from whom I have had an immense amount of help and reference material. Google his two books about 41 - 'Blood, Sweat and Courage', and 'Blood, Sweat and Valour'; very good reads, and no - I'm not on commission!

That is a great shot, and your jag looks lovely, mate top work! I have the revell harrier gr9 with the 41 squadron colours in the stash and I'm looking forward to that one, could you tell me if the are any variants like maybe a 75th anniversary of that one too? If so where can I find it?

Phil - 41 flew jags until 2006 when it disbanded as an operational sqn. The Sqn number was then given to the Fast Jet Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit, with Tornados and Harriers, and then it was given to the RAF Test and Evaluation Sqn, with Typhoons and Tornados. I know that there was a special scheme on the Tornado for the London olympics, but I don't think anything was done for Harriers.
