    Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire

This week I will be making a presentation of a set of cuff-links made from a Spitfire mk1's Merlin II engine crankcase to somebody on his retirement and decided to also present him with a model of the aircraft they were made from, as it looked on the day it was shot down in October 1940. This needed to be a quick and rather hurried build to get it ready on time. Fortunately the Tammy 1/48 Spit 1 is a very quick and simple build so it has only taken a few weeks. I would have preferred a 1/32 kit but the only option available, Revell, would have been a bigger longer job correcting errors and converting from a MkII.

This was only the 12th Spitfire off the production line and first flew on the 19th October 1938 then being assigned to 19 Squadron. On the 7th August 1940 it was reassigned to 616 Squadron and then to 603 Squadron on the 28th September - then on the 5th October 1940 was shot down by a Bf109 over Dover (where I am sat writing this...) crashing in Chilham. The pilot P/O James Storr Morton survived and went on to survive the war.

    Here she is.

I will be doing a thread soon for my L-16 build starting tonight.

I would, if I could but I have already had them stashed away by his p.a. ready for the presentation....

            Hi Barry
A very nice build of the Tamiya Spitfire and a lovely gesture to go with the cufflinks.
I'm sure the retiring gentleman will love them.

            Cheers
            Paul

That'll be a great companion to the cuff links Barry. Be sure to get a pic if opportunity arises once they've been presented.

Very nice indeed. Just the right amount of weathering to make it look good, I love these early spittys

Very nice build Barry. I do prefer the early temperate scheme, it just looks right to me.

Great build barry , the lucky recipient is going to be chuffed with that , and the cufflinks too. Lovely presentation on the mirror , always a nice way of showing off all angles of a model, cheers tony
