Airfix 1/72 scale F15 Hi-tech series (first post on here).

    Hi All,

My first post on here is my first model I've built in 15 years! It was a present from my grandmother when I was about 13 years old (I'm now 40). Thought I would take up the hobby again after this hiatus and finally get it built...

Took 3 months to build. All hand painted and vanished. The decal fitting process was very long winded, over 100 mostly small decals, and the build was very fiddly/tough to say the least. I'm very satisfied with the outcome although it wasn't 100 percent perfect.

Would welcome some feedback. Thanks for reading. Gavin

It doesn't do to rush into things!
That looks really good, and welcome to the forum.

Thank you. Might choose something with a few less decals next time, it was a bit tedious fitting that many. Don't understand why there had to be over 100!

Thank you, yeah I'm glad I didn't rush into building this when I was an impatient teenager! I'm still old school, hand paint my models....Might pick up an airbrush one day!

Modern aircraft are covered in all kinds of warnings and things, and Airfix seem to want you to add them all. Nobody is forcing you, though — if you leave them all off, few people will probably notice

One thing I’m wondering about is if the model is as glossy in the flesh as it seems in the photos. I’d think about adding a coat of matt varnish over it (except the clear bits, of course) to tone that down.

Yeah it's a thinned down gloss finish so it's subtly glossy in the flesh. Yeah I went for a warts and all build, fitted all the decals in the end. This hi-tech series had pewter and brass components which I found interesting. Each afterburner had 15 tiny brass fins each which had to be glued with utmost precision.
These were a special edition release I believe and probably a tough model to choose to get back in the game perhaps?

Not an aircraft man myself, but I know a good looking model when I see it and that is a good looking model.

Thanks for that. Modelling is very satisfying. What do you build then if not aircraft?

I do a mix of military and civilian stuff, mostly 1/35 scale with the odd 1/24.

Great looking Eagle Gavin, probably not an easy kit as you suggest but you've made a good job of it.

Thank you. Yeah it was very intricate work indeed. I wanted a challenge and I certainly got it alright! Will probably choose a traditional prop aircraft as my next build instead of a jet.
