Finished Tamiya 1/32 P-51 Mustang

Hey guys. Here's my finally completed Mustang. I'm really pleased with how it came out with the Alclad. I ended up putting a light coat of Testor's dullcote on it take away the shine and make it not look factory fresh. I used Alclad Highly Polished Aluminum for the metal, and Tamiya Red and Olive Drab for the color.

In getting ready for the Alclad, i put down a coat of Tamiya black acrylic followed by a couple layers of future klear. then the alclad. i put maybe 2 layers of future on the alclad as well in preparation for the decals. I did my normal micro-sol/set process for the decals (which went down great i should say, love those Tamiya kits), followed by another coat or 2 of klear to seal in the decals. Once that dried i did a chalk pastel wash for the panel lines. The streaking and grime marks are ground chalk pastels applied with a brush.

The reviewer of the model in the magazine FineScale Modeler said when he was done he just stared at it for 30 minutes. I didn't stare for quite that long, but I must admit maybe 10 minutes or so looking at all the detail of the engine and the quality of the kit engineering.

This might be my favorite model to date next to my Slave I. It's going to be tough going back to 1/48 after this gem in 1/32. I recommend this kit to anyone with some experience and who isn't afraid of Alclad (it's really not as bad to work with as it's made out).

thanks guys. i had some missteps with alclad, but the weathering toned down some things that most likely only i would notice. i appreciate the compliments!

Those Tamiya kits are truly superb and you've done a wonderful job here.

I built the Spitfire IX last year and it was great. I've just got hold of a Spitfire VIII to build a special dio of an 81 Sqn Spit in Burma with my dad as the ground crew working on the radio This is part of my special project this year to build an example of each plane he would have worked on while he was with 81 sqn from 1942-45

Will be boarding out more of the loft and building a custom built cupboard soon as my build's are currently on a shelf at work. Am now getting tempted by Tamiya's 1/48 Lancaster so might have to build a bigger cupboard LOL!!
