Heres the excellent Airfix bf109e-4 in 1/72 . Finished as the aircraft of Franz von Werra - the only german pilot to escape from the Allies and return to Germany .
Von Werra was shot down over Winchett in Kent by Gerald ‘stapme’ Stapleton of 603 sqn flying a Spitfire and crash landed in a field on Loves farm. He was captured and taken to Maidstone , this is where his first of several escape attempts occured. After being transferred to Lancashire he tried again , was captured and sent to Derbyshire .Here he teamed up with several others and after digging a tunnel , four prisoners escaped , all the others quickly being recaptured . Von Werra had taken his flying suit and made his way to RAF Hucknall by pretending to be a Dutch bomber pilot . Here he was captured again after attempting to escape in a Spitfire , being apprehended as he sat in the cockpit trying to familiarise himself with the controls.
He was then sent to Canada where he escaped again , this time making it over the border to the USA ( at this point still neutral ) where he turned himself over to the authorities. While the authorities were trying to get him extradited back to Canada , the German consul helped him get over the border to Mexico . From there he travelled back to Germany via Brazil, Spain and Italy.
