    Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire IXe

Well I have bit the bullet and tried one of these uber kits. Did I enjoy it?

Yes! A great kit and a great one to build.

The kit is born as an IXc but I wanted to be a bit different and build it as an e wing.

Extra bits used: Resin door. e-wing conversion set, new rocker covers WITH the Rolls Royce name.

These all from Barracuda studios. The seat belts are those from HWC (?) and where a pain in the ...

The decals (!) are a mix of those from the kit and a sheet from Xtradecal.

Oh and a whole heap of copper, brass and lead wire from the bits box.

painted with Xtracrylics, finished with Vallejo.

Would I build another? Hell Yes.

Problems with the build? A few. The worst of which where the decals!!! I don't normally have issue with Tamiya decals but these where a pain. Seamed to be to thick and refused to have anything to do with Micro sol. The worse where removed and the Xtradecal ones used. The wing roundels where reduced to a wrinkled mess in no time so they came off and I painted the darn things.

    Enough twaddle. Pictures!

I've got no idea about e-wings and model numbers so all I have to say on the matter is ....

I like that .. Lots of well painted detail and some nice subtle ''used'' effects.

I take it you use this hairy stick for the fine details? Or are you a complete wizard with an ab?

I used the hairy stick for the cockpit details, the Rolls Royce emblem, to dry brush the ware on the motor and to put the wash on. Other than that it was airbrushed. Oh a couple of touch ups on the decals.

The instructions say they should be painted green chromate, but the only photographs I have seen they are only green after a refit or when new. All the others the paint is either worn off, burnt of or cleaned off. They are painted with Alclad copper then over sprayed with burnt iron to age it a bit. The small brass and copper tubes are... brass and copper wire

Thanls for the comments and keep em coming.

Top job Ian, she looks fantastic.

It's a great kit, two models in one with the Merlin and you've made that look wonderful. I had enough trouble fitting all the kit bits without adding more

                  Cheers

                  Steve

Beautiful build Ian, despite your decal issues sounds like it was a great kit.

LOL thanks Barry. They are rather good to build.

Well..... I do just happen to have a decal sheet for a Danish IXe. I was going to do that first, but opted for the 74sqd bird instead.

                          An RAF Mustang... Hmm.

The FAA had Corsair so that to could be a temptation at some point. (When the price has fallen a bit more).

As for what's next I have just started a Mossy which I am converting to a TR33

Sometimes I think I see too many spitfires (please don't shoot me!), but for this one I'll make an exception. That's a cracking build Ian.
