XV744 (construction number 712007) was built as a GR.1. It first flew on 5 March 1969 and was delivered to the RAF on 9 April. It was on eof two Harriers competed in the London to New York Daily Mail Trans-Atlantic Air Race in 1969. The Post Office Tower to Empire State Building time achieved by SQNLDR Tom Lecky-Thompson in XV741 was 6 hours, 11 minutes. From west to east SQN LDR Graham Williams using XV744 made it in a flight time 5 hrs, 49 minutes but was beaten by an RAF Phantom. XV744 was subsequently upgraded to GR.3 standard in October 1974. It served in the RAF until 1992, after which it was sent to the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham in April 1993. It was acquired by the Tangmere Aviation Museum in March 2013 and is preserved there.
