Jakko’s Brewster B-339C/D

My ML-KNIL Brewster B-339 is now finished, so here are some photos of it:

Though I built it as part of the Animal Antics group build, once I had started I realised it wasn’t actually really suitable for it, because “Buffalo” is the British name for this plane — in Dutch service, they were known as Brewsters, never as Buffalos. I’ll make up for it with some Sherman Crabs

As for the model: after painting it and adding the markings, as shown in the build thread, I enhanced the panel lines with my home-made concoction (colourless acrylic floor varnish plus black pigment), painting it into the lines and wiping it away towards the rear with my fingers. Then I drybrushed the green with lighter shades using Humbrol enamels and Vallejo acrylics, to fade the paint, again from the front towards the rear to make sure the streaks would run in the direction of flight. Then all that remained was adding the wheels and bombs and removing the masking.

As for the bombs, I’m not sure these would have been carried on the final ML-KNIL mission (again, see the build threat), and if they were, I’m not sure these American bombs are the ones that would have been carried But I think they’re plausible, so I used the kit-supplied ones — also because I have no idea what bombs the ML-KNIL actually used. American ones seem likely both because the ML-KNIL used almost nothing but American planes, and by early 1942 they probably got American supplies as well.

Thanks Not sure it really holds up well today, though. I’m a little bit tempted to try and find a Special Hobby kit and build that as an ex-RAF ML-KNIL machine (basically RAF camouflage with a black and a sky wing underside, plus British roundels painted out and replaced by Dutch flags) to see how it compares to the Tamiya kit.

Looks good to me Jakko. Isn't the one on Soesterrberg called a Buffalo?

I’m not sure. I was there some years ago, but don’t recall what the caption by the (replica) plane said. It’s fairly likely it will mention “Buffalo” but if so, that’s likely because that’s what people call the plane due to its official British designation. It’s apparently not a name that was ever used in Dutch service. In other words: much like the Sherman tank, which everyone calls by its British name even when talking about use in other countries where it wasn’t called that (which includes American service).

              Hi Jakko
Enjoyed the build and the end result does you credit. A few issues along the way but you've taken them in your stride.

Thanks for taking part in the GB Jakko. It has certainly turned out well whatever you want to call it.

Great looking plane Jakko, looks like it would be good at stunt flying.

Not sure about that, but apparently if the wing guns were provided with about half their normal ammo load and the plane also wasn’t fuelled fully, it could keep up with Japanese fighters in turning dogfights. (This discovery is why the Dutch had more success with it than the British, incidentally.)
