    EE lightning color question

Guys, I got the new airfix 1/72 EE lightnng and was looking to maybe do the camo scheme.

I see however that the one option is for high speed silver bottom and all over top green only, no grey.

WOuld the same aircraft at some stage of it's live be painted with the grey/green over silver???

    Thanx

I could be wrong Theuns but I've never seen one in that camo scheme , it's a favourite of mine is the lightning and I've only ever seen photos in the green top with silver underside or all over silver.

As I say I could be wrong and I'm sure someone on here will be able to help if I am

I just googled it and there are defenately grey /green Lightnings, but I wanted to make sure I don't put wrong Sqn markings on a plane that never wore that scheeme.

Oh well I'm wrong then lol

I might have ago at one with that livery , can you let me know if it did have the silver or grey underside please

Also aircraft from that era had a wrap around camo now that would look cool.

I look forward to seeing your build

looks like silver to me. I see however that the finflash decal for the scheeme I would like to do is not correct as given in the kit. Not a big deal, can be sorted.

Yeah I agree that's silver but that does look cool thanks for the info mate

I might get the 1/48 airfix kit and do that , I've built the 1/72 and it's a good kit parts fit really well and the detail is much better than the old one

No's 5 & 11 squadron flew with the grey/green/silver camo. Here are some decals http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X72155. Cheers Derek

p.s. I think I have a magazine with some photos of the grey / green camo, can scan them if interested.

Theuns, Have found the magazine, since copyright is involved I don't want the forum to get into trouble, so If you can send me a PM with a disposable address I will email you the scans over the weekend. I will also send scans of a page of the 1/48 Airfix Lightning instructions which shows the camo pattern and the Humbrol colours for that kit. Cheers Derek

                    Thanx mate. PM sent.

Another question, The "silver" ones, were they all over bare metal, or silver painted? I can't really tell from the online pix, they certainly do not look highly pollished.

Would imagine they would be anodised aluminium alloy, have some B&W photos of some which were almost a mirror finish, but they would deteriorate very quickly with corrosion and friction due to their speed. Every panel ended up having a different patina. Must say I prefer the BMF. This was my attempt a few years ago. Got your PM, will send info over the weekend. Cheers Derek

Derek, that look very cool mate! I am starting to think that I might do it in Alclad and get a Hawker Hunter to do in the grey/green scheeme.

Green over unpainted aluminium was the province of 19 & 92 Squadrons, since they were permanently based in Germany; originally the early Marks were unpainted, bur camouflage became necessary later on.

Theuns, Have sent email with scans. Don't know which paint you use, but I would be looking at Tamiya's XF-82 RAF Ocean Grey and XF-81 RAF Dark Green, both with a touch of white. Used this on my Airfix 1/48 Buccaneer. Cheers Derek
