Flight Simulation-Post your queries and experiences here.

I am sure that there must be literally millions of Flight Simmers out there, the chance to fly your favourite aircraft has never been easier, together with the overlay software to simulate realistic scenery, more and more airfields even small airstrips etc you can fly around the world if you have the desire or the time to do so,feel free to share your knowledge or discuss any problems in setting up your simulator here,I will get the ball rolling by asking a question about water textures,or in this case the water itself as it merges with the land areas, this is what happened-

One of my favourite areas to fly from is the Isle of Mull, the airstrip at Glenforsa can be approached over the rocky mountains in that area, the approach is demanding because you need to drop in over those mountains gently easing the throttle to get it right and not to undershoot,up until now there has not been any problem until this morning ! the Beechcraft 18 Trigear shown above on landing at Glasgow was the aircraft that I was flying, imagine my surprise when on final approach there was no runway ? closer inspection showed that the runway was in fact under water ! so I overshot and diverted to Oban, another small airfield the other side of the island, sure enough the same problem, that too was under water just as if the banks had swollen, thats how I managed to finish up at Glasgow in the view above as both my favourite strips were un-serviceable,so can anyone please explain what has happened ? has a subsequent overlay or update suddenly swallowed up the coastline, something is clearly not right.

It looks as if I was wrong about any interest in Flight-Simulation here ? I have un-stuck the thread due to no follow up postings,ah well you cannot win them all.

      Barry,

I'm not so sure about no interest in flight simulators. I spend a fair amount of time on them and thoroughly enjoy flying around as much as possible when I am at home. I have to admit they tend to be Combat flight simulators but I do enjoy the odd mission before dinner!

Unfortunately, not being that clued up computer wise, I wasn't able to offer any usefull suggestions to the issue you were experiencing so I didn't follow up.

My only experince is shooting down He111s and Bf109s on the excellent "Il-2 Strumovik" computer game. It's fun for me, and a great sim. But I am not sure if anyone else wants to know how satisfying it feels as you see the pilots bail and and chalk up another "kill".

That is currently my favourite sim as well. I can even run it on my laptop so I can have a go while I am out here.

I find it very realistic and quite an eye opener to realise just how difficult it was to fly these aircraft. Combat Flight Simulator 2 made it all far too easy for us.

One thing I like as a bit of a distraction is to fly the bomber and take out as many vehicles as possible on the take off run then shoot down the rest of the flight!

I do like flying the 109 though as it makes you realise just how important it was to maintain airspeed and just how difficult it was to throw these things around the sky.

I've just started into R/C planes, the first item I got was G3 Real Flight.

I was floundering about with it 'cos I just didn't know how to fly. I had posted in another thread about batteries, and someone posted a link to the RC Group forum in the USA. I joined that forum after having been very impressed with it.

Then I perused a thread for beginners on how to fly and other things.

I used the tips and I had success immediately, I've made successfull landing after landing, not all of them on the runway mind you, but I kept at it today and eventually I got there.

As far as I'm concerned G3 is one of my better buys, it really does let me learn to fly.

***Good for you Ian,there is no doubt about it that in the past few months Flight-Sims have improved dramatically and really aid your flight training, dont worry about landing it at first on the runway ! the precision will come later as you make constant landings, once you have mastered the landing then go for circuit flying, touch and goes just like in full sized aviation, such practise will give you great confidence and precision as you grease the model into land, strangely enough there is not enough emphasis on landing practise in model aircraft teaching schedules, but it is the one dicipline that will sharpen up your flying,go for it.

thanks Barry, as the saying goes :-

Take off is optional, but landings are mandatory.

Re. touch & go, I'm getting to be an expert on this due to the many attempts to get the landings correct.

But I am getting there, last night I did get to land on the runway, not once but 3 times.

                    Practice makes perfect.

                    Edited on 11th June,

Yep, I'm now up to 7 out of 10 landings are as I planned to do them on the slow plane.

I a faster trainer and after I got used to the extra speed I got to land it OK a few times.

I fly the Bf 109 G10 (just switched to Fw 190 D9) in IL2. Sometimes I use it as a reference for things like chipping, weathering, etc. Great sim for ww2

I'm a big il-2 fan also. I've been flying it since the beginning and still do, until the Storm of War BoB comes out next year. If anyone is interested the developers are posting dev. updates every Friday on: IL-2 Sturmovik - Official 1C Company forum

                        /Daniel

I fly loads of different WWII aircraft in the Warbirds Online game. Mostly tend to fly the Lancaster, FW190A8 and Ki61 though

Free Massively Multiplayer Flight Combat Simulator and Tank Combat Simulator

Also get to use the Sherman, Panther and Tiger Tank in it

Thanks for the link, this is the first I've heard of this one and it's right up my street. Time for a nosey around the developers site.
