Aircraft ID Numbers.

Hello again modelling friends, a quick question.

I'm working on two kits both exactly the same (Revell Apache Longbow 1:144) and am concerned with the tail numbers as they would be exactly the same, if I was to use the decals provided. Can anybody suggest a way round this, or would it be acceptable to use decals for one, then paint the second increasing by numerical order is(for example 70360,70361....)

Any advice or knowledge on this would be great.

I would look online and see if there are any tail numbers you can rearrange with the other set

Cut the others up and 'fix' a number for the second one.

If total accuracy is your aim you will want to find a serial number series that fits both choppers at the same time frame, that where in the same place at the same time.

But if its just for your own enjoyment, any serial will do. (dont tell any one but I have done it as well. )

Thanks Alan, I guess you mean decal sets? Unfortunately I've tried that and there seems to only be the Revell kit available in that scale

No I just mean have a look at some Apache helicopters and check out the the tail numbers and see what you can do

Rickoshea, that is an awesome link, and I may be able to adjust, however the kit only provides US and Dutch decals, but I shall be taking note of British tail numbers for the larger Apache kit (that does have AAC decals) I have stashed!

UK military serials are not always in order. Some aircraft fleet types may have different letter prefixes and some numbers can be totally out of phase for many reasons like a production aircraft for one mark may have been converted to another mark, e.g. Nimrod XZ284 was the only MR2 built to this standard from new when most of the others were built as MR1's and were XV prefixed. Nimrod R1 serialised XV249 was converted from a stored MR variant when the aircraft it replaced, XW666 crashed - her sister R1's were XW664/665.

Another example for random numbering would be, believe it or not, a cut and shut of two damaged airframes. This occurred with two Puma HC1's, one with a tail boom write off and the second with a smashed up cockpit and cabin.
