How to tint a cockpit canopy

Hi Everybody sorry been away for a very long time, I have still kept modelling slowly.


Am building an Eduard Nato F16 and wondered if it was possible to tint the canopy?


I think I have seen a yellowish tone in some photos but I may be wrong.


I know one of you guys will know.

Use Tamiya X-24 'Clear Yellow' thin it with a drop of Tamiya thinner and airbrush the inside surface of the canopy. Use several very thin coats, stop before you think it's dark enough, go back to it after a few minutes to check. The X-24 goes on as a golden yellow, which is right for the F-16. Derek


p.s. If you have scrap clear plastic try it on that or a clear plastic bottle.

Or you could mix it into some Johnsons Kleer and dip it.

On the Merlin I use Vallejo model air which is to thick for this. But I added their glaze medium about 50% which keeps the paint with its original thickness but thins the colour. I added about 20% thinners and this produced a good finish. Sprayed at low pressure to stop spotting and in about three thin coats. As Derek has mentioned most important to paint the inside as it gives a depth.


Vallejo also produce in Model transparent paint. Not used it yet. It comes in half a dozen of the main colours.

ive heard of people using kleer with a few drops of food colouring in it to get the right tint

Thanks for all the ideas, got some spare canopies so gonna try a few methods.


Did think about the dip in clear but I keep getting odd results with it? when I leave it to dry it runs to the lowest point and creates an opaque area.


Phil it's a great kit typical eduard lots of brassin, etch and of course amazing decals. As for price I don't know it was a prezzy.

Thanks Martin, nice present. I have seen one for £50 and I know Eduard have discontinued them so may look at it again, do you get the resin parts (wheels, exhaust etc) with this kit them? Look forward to some photos

Yes phil you get resin ejection seat jet parts, nozzle and wheels plus some etch for cockpit and outside.


Coming together quite well better than a prop less moving parts. Loads of weapons.


Only downside is my aversion to spraying white paint I can spray any other paint enamel, acrylic even Alclad, But white just cant seem to get it right

That's interesting why is that do you think? I will have to spray some white on my spitfire shortly and am wondering how it's going to sit going over dark colours. Now your saying you have problems spraying white I'm even more worried

I sort of cheat a little now, I use Halfords plastic primer in white.


Decant some into a jar using a straw stir till all the bubbles dissipate, Now your good to go it's flat and sprays really well. Practice first though. Wear a mask.


Cleans up with ordinary AB cleaner.


Somebody told me that white paint is really hard to paint because of the particles used to make it settle on the bottom and takes a lot to mix it back to paint, I use 2 ball bearings in my Vallejo white but only use it for small jobs.
