Any one know of a model of a Tornado GR4

1/48 scale I am after the type that would have been used in Afghanistan.

Any one know of one it would be a great help.

I know that Revell are producing one to be released at the end of the year.

There are a lot out there but not GR4 types.

I never worked on Tornado's Laurie but I watched plenty of them taxiing past the SAR dispersal at Lossiemouth - I don't think there are any major external differences between the GR1/A and GR4/A, the difference being in the avionics and weapons systems.

The GR1/4 and GR1A/4A do have an external difference, the A variant is a reconnaissance aircraft and I believe it had one or both guns removed to make way for internal black boxes and also has a fairing on the bottom of the fuselage adjacent to the radome/nose gear. Note that there was a GR1B too in the anti-shipping role, I think 617 Sqn fulfilled this role for a while.

Flounder Al would be your best member to ask as he worked on a couple of Tornado squadrons....but where is he?

Thanks Rick great information. I had wondered how much difference there was. Have to admit, sad, that a bit of difference does not excite me more the finish and looks of the final thing is my goal.

Well done Si. If I was near I would kiss you. Fortunately I am about 400 miles such a shame.

Maximum bidder at the moment. Will let you know how I get on.

No problems Laurie, well worth if you can get it at a good price, plus you can always off-set the cost by selling on the Lanc on here.

Italeri do a GR1 in 1/48 scale but as mentioned the external differences are minimal to non existent, only the payload will vary.

If you are going down your Herrick route with this you do realise that you'll have to include Chinooks, Seakings, Hercules and Nimrods.....you'll need a much bigger shelf!

As has been said the differences are minimal Laurie so I would get a GR1 and add any tiny differences. Try and get the Italeri one - I had the Airfix one and its a proper dog of a kit - poorly moulded , basic detail , raised lines on parts and softly recessed on others , its not one of their finest moments!! I ended up E-bay ing mine as I couldnt face the battle !! cheers tony

I thought , Rick, that Farnborough my have some space. That you would procure that space and look after my aircraft on a daily--- no--- hourly basis.

There would only be a small charge, by me, for the privileged.

Yes I am after a Chinook but cannot find an RAF type. May have to settle for a USA jobby and try some mods and RAF decals.

Surprised at the Seakings had not realised that. Thought they were all Fleet Air Arm ? Loan to the army or RAF perhaps !

You missed one Rick the Harrier GRs 7 and 9. Also a Puma.

Hercules and Nimrods only if we can do the Farnborough deal. Love to build a Nimrod just a really beautiful aircraft.

Only beaten by it's predecessor the out of this world's "Elgar's Nimrod".

The RN had a detachment of Seaking HC4's out there, the new tool Airfix 1/72 kit would be perfect for your Herrick theme if it weren't for the scale. The only Seaking's operated by the RAF were the HAR3/3A but not all were in yellow, at least one was in Dark Sea Grey for use in the FI's.

Here's a picture of me sitting on it in Benbecula if you don't believe me.

I'm not sure Puma's were deployed to Afghanistan.

Sadly Laurie, there are no spare hangars at Farnborough for you!
