    What books do you recommend?

    Hello everyone,

With the gap since I last did any model-making being so wide, I thought I might try and bridge at least my knowledge shortfall (the skills will hopefully come with practice) by having at my elbow for reference a book or two on such subjects as Aircraft modelling tips and techniques and even those on airbrushing and finishing. Among the myriad of books out there, with your help I'm hoping to find one or two good'uns!

    Has anyone any recommendations, please?

With many thanks and kind regards,

    Graham.

There are so many out there I would recommend checking out charity or second hand shops and just getting your hands on a few cheap ones. From the few I have picked up it seems to be the same information just written differently

Think you will be better off with DVD Graham. Learn much quicker watching an "expert" doing it.

I only use acrylics and if you are into that the DVD "AFV acrylic techiniques by Mig Jimenez is a first class.

Although it concentrates on Military Vehicles the techniques can be applied to aircraft.

Think John in the shop stocks that one.

The I have found extremely good are a series of Magazines called "The Weathering Magazines.

They take you in each magazine through a particular effect.

Although magazines they are regularly available.

http://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/mode...vds/books.html John has a lot of info stuff here.

        Dear Laurie,

I was hoping an expert might point me in the right direction and I was right!

Thanks so much, Laurie, for that useful steer -- of course, DVDs are FAR better and what better place to find them than in our own shop.

How SLOW of me -- but then, that's age for you, isn't it!

        All the best for now.

        Kind regards,

        Graham.

I am in a similar position to yourself.

I went to W H Smiths and had a browse through the modelling magazines. There are several titles, I chose 'Scale Aircraft Modelling', and now buy it every month. As I read the articles I gradually pick up current ideas & products. Even if a particular kit is not my preferred choice, it all helps.

Scale War Machines on YouTube are pretty good for demonstrating tips & techniques - plus they're British so no annoying accents (sorry Jim & Chris!)

Magazines do cover lots of different ideas and a good source of inspiration. Plus they some do provide different websites for modelling supplies. Unfortunately they are very expensive

I've found the AK magazines to be very informative as well as some books I've bought to bolster my knowledge and skill set.

Airbrushing and Finishing Scale Models by Brett green (Osprey Masterclass)

Scale Aircraft Modelling by Mark Stanton

Painting and Finishing Techniques by Gary Edmundson (Osprey Modelling)

Hornby magazine Skills Guide - Weathering, Volume 1

                        Hi Gavin,

Many thanks for your recommendations. That's a nice list which brackets the areas of my interest; I'm eyeing in particular Scale Aircraft Modelling by Mark Stanton, but I'd have to make certain it doesn't major on flying models, which at present is beyond my pocket and ken!

                        Happy modelling!

                        Regards,

                        Graham.

It all depends on your best way of learning , myself I find it difficult in some areas to read tips from books internet so my best way is DVD or being shown and since I joined my club I've learnt a lot more and progressed faster and that's not to say the good folks on here won't give you the best advice and tips you could get

                              Thankfully, no.

It is just for static scale aircraft models of most types and formats - very informative IMHO.
