Hi Jeff welcome to the forum, I really want to try rc flying and almost bought a spitfire last time I was in model zone but I'm worried that the first time I fly it it will crashing down and I would have wasted my money.

Nice planes Jeff. Wish I had the time to build scaleRC again, but wit work and kids time dissapears fast LOL!

John if I might give a bit of advice as an instructor and flyer for 23 years, buy the spit, but laeve it in the box till you have succesfullybuilt and flown a few trainer tipes.You will learn to fly easier planes and also to build light.

Go to your local RC club and chat to the guys there. They will point you in the right direction and also help you get intoutch with someone who cloud help you to fly till you are "safe"

Thanks chaps, and John, follow Theuns advice.. I wish I had! I built and tried to fly a Spitfire when I first got into R.C. modeling back in the 1970's and destroyed it moments after getting it airborne and that was more by luck than judgement! I joined a local model flying club, took their advice and bought a trainer and learnt to fly that before going on too more adventurous stuff.

I'm in the process of building a 62" span cessna 172 (the old type with the upright fin) but it's from very old set of plans and was originaly designed for free flight so a lot of mods are having to be made.

It's one of those models that seems to take ages to progress, I'm sure many of you have had the same problem with one or two models, and it would be very easy to give up, but hey! what else can I do now I'm retired!

Hey Jeff, your 172 is lookinggood! I did most of my PPL training on a C-172 and I just love the look of the old "Fastback" 172's. Interestingly the old design is marginally faster than the new look 172's due to less drag from the straight rear fuse.

Don't feel bad about slow progress. I have a n own desight DHC1 Chipmunk in 1/5 scale (did my firs 6 hours of PPL on it) that has been sitting uncompleted for 5 years now, the same with a 1/6 scale scrathbuilt PT 17 Stearman. Well atleast I got the dummy engine for it a month ago! LOL

Thanks Theuns, I'll post a few more pics'. It's nice that you're interested. The look of that type of 172 I think is more appealing than the later models. I flew a C185 a lot for a skydiving school and I loved the look of that aircraft too. Notice how tidy my workshop is!!

I've got a bunch of plans of aircraft that I'm always going to 'do soon' but I feel I must persevere with the 172. At the moment I'm stuck with doing the interior as I'n sure of the route to take. I'll probably be using blue foam for the seats and plastic card or balsa for the trim. I don't even know where to get blue foam from but I'm sure someone on here will enlighten me!

I know you're a long way from Durban, but I visited there several time in the '60's when I was in the Merchant Navy and thought what a beautiful country it was. (is?) I was friends with several South African guys and Rhodesians on the Union Castle Line ships I was on. Great guys who really knew how to enjoy themselves!!

Thanks Andy. The size of my models being dictated by the available space in the shed! Of course the larger the model the more scale stuff you have to add, which makes the building take longer!! Vicious circle really!! Do I see you building a rather nice P.47?

Jeff it still is a very beautifull continent, just a pitty about the politics:-(

I know Durban well although I live in the norther "Highlands"

I also have a stack of plans I oneday want to build, DC-3 ,Spit,Hurricaine,Mustprang,to many to even recall!

I have a mate who was an Airforce Instructor on C-185's, he was one of the 2 test pilots for my full size L-18c I built and fly.It is a military PA-18 -115 HP. If I can find the time I want to build a nice 1/5 scale of it, but my career as aircraft rebuilder (and plastic modeling) keeps me to buzy for now LOL!

I have not even taken any pix of the Chippy, shame on me! I atach of the L-18, can't find the pix for the others now

Thuens, I just love that L 18. I was also involved with the repair/rebuild of some nice aircraft. Helped rebuild the Super Cub and the Stampe, doing the paint on both. Did'nt get to fly in the Stampe much as it was soon sold on, but did a bunch of hours in the Cub, a delight to fly but it could catch you out on landing if you were'nt paying attention! Funnily enough, the C 185, although reportedly by those who 'Knew' about these things about it only being only safe when in the hangar, I never had a single scarey moment even in the wost conditions. Maybe I was just lucky!! I'll attach a couple of pics' of said aircraft. I see you 'library' of plans are similar to mine!!!

Yes, sad how politics and the people who live by them can ruin a beautiful country. The U.K. is'nt much better, if at all.

Hi Jeff. i completed the P47 quite some time ago and have since built the B25 also on here and im now working on the SE5a. Plenty of pics for you to see there.
