    ICM Kits

    They any good?

Specifically, aircraft in 1/48. There's some cheap ones on Ebay at the moment and I was wondering about snapping up a couple to get a feel for building bigger kits (since I'm a dyed-in-the-wool 1/72er at the moment).

I'm currently building the 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk VIII in SEAC marking and although the model has very fine detail, there is a LOT of flash, sink marks and some well documented fit problems. My other other experience with ICM kits is the RAF pilots and ground crew set which I thought was rather good, although the plastic was rather brittle and fragile.

There's a bunch on Ebay for 99p plus postage. They might go up a bit if there's some bidding at the end of the auctions on Friday, but they look still pretty cheap for a 1/48 kit.

I'm attracted to the RAF Spit IX with ground crew actually, and also the PZL P.24 which is a nice looking aeroplane as well as being in my specific area of interest. At that price though, it's more just snapping it up for practicing on.

Hi matt , ive done a couple of the icm 1/48 kits (yak 9t and yak 7) and have found them to be very good. They were both complete with a basic engine and seperate engine panels and a decent cockpit. They built up ok and were good value , you should expect to pay up to £10, maybe half that if you fall lucky, the ones with ground crew and pilots included are even better value. cheers tony

I have 3 of their kits, Spit IX, 109F and P-51D (1/48). The Spitfire and 109 have the option for an exposed engine - fairly detailed considering the scale but quite fiddly to do. Parts had lots of flashing and sink holes but the finished product looks good enough. The mustang looks identical to the Tamiya kit minus guiding pins. I havent built that one yet though. I would say for the price they are good kits.

Chris i've heard the comparisons about the P-51D on other websites too. Not a bad thing if true (unless you work for Tamiya lol).

I just had a look and it's definitely the same (Only built the Tamiya one a few months back) but not as high a quality. Hard to describe really. All the detail is there, but it just has a different feel (and a bit of flash) compared to any Tamiya kit. Probably down the plastic used. If I remember this was slightly more expensive than the Spit and 109 - £12 I think. The other two were less than a tenner.

Here's my ICM Spitfire. We weren't best of friends during the build but I quite like it now...

If you want to build it with the cowling ON then just forget about the engine, as has been documented on that there Internet :-)

Hmm. Worth spending a couple of quid then, by the sound of it.

I can only comment on the 1/48 P-51D , but I found it to be of hight standards.Good fit and detail.Plastic a little soft, but joins well and sands like a dream.

For 99p I would buy a stack of them!
