I now have the Tamiya P51D Mustang in 1:32 scale on its way, thank you John.

I would ideally like to build one in RAF service in 1945, perhaps 112 Sqn RAF based in Italy, as below.

Can anyone confirm the following:

Is the RAF Mustang at that time essentially the same as the P51D and are the fitting options covered by the Tamiya kit?

Are there are aftermarket decals available in 1:32 scale for such an aircraft?

This would be my first build that is not out of the box - a few builds to do before I start it, so lots of time for research. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I have done a bit of research myself:

The RAF had both 'D' versions (RAF Mk IV) and 'K's (RAF Mk IVA) the only difference between them being the type of propeller. In service 'K's were often retro-fitted with 'D' props because the 'K' version was poorly regarded. So I assume that the build would work with either type.

The canopy is another problem though as I have seen drawings with a canopy with a distinct lip (as per pic above) at the back and others with a smooth back (as some models are depicted too). A photo of a real 112 aircraft in flight is not conclusive, it seems as if it might have a slight lip, certainly not a distinct one as above. Again, I am not sure but perhaps the model would work with any of the kit canopy options.

Any views?
