Currently in pieces at Coventry airport on its 8 year major overhaul is the Memorial Flight Avro Lancaster,see here devoid of all paint,to check the skinning she was split at the rear fuselage in order to remove the elevator torque rods,these are being manufactured to a special order including the flap torque tubes to extend the aircrafts life.
All painting should be completed by end of March as re-assembly takes place.
Every 22 days a committee get together to discuss the aircrafts progress,everything revolves around those vital assemblies being ready in order to join everything together again,there is a special ceremony also planned to take place at the aircrafts base at R.A.F Coningsby.
This is the second time that the aircraft has been seen to have major servicing undertaken by civilian contractors,Air Atlantique Engineering have provided the infrastructure for a specialist vintage aircraft company undertaking the vital work.
