Hi Tony, don't worry about the swastika thing. We're all grown ups and the topic has cropped up before. You can buy decal sheets in the different scales which contain nothing but swastikas in the different styles (which changed over time) and sizes (different aircraft had different sizes). I model a lot of Luftwaffe stuff so they are worth it for me. Hannants usually have them in stock. If you are just after the odd couple someone here may well have some spare they can send you.
The law in Germany does ban the display of the device, and several others, except in an educational context so you may see them on museum aircraft. Models are 'toys' and don't qualify for the exemption. Even an anti-nazi organisation found itself in court a few years ago for a poster showing a swastika being thrown into a dustbin! I believe common sense eventually prevailed in that case.I discussed this with some German colleagues a while ago and they were quite happy that it should be this way and that we have to respect.
As far as the Messerspit cowling goes, without actually looking at my references, the line of the cowling, particularly the top is very different from the Bf109. I'm pretty sure they cobbled something together from a Bf110.
I don't think you can lable the swastika,Finnish or otherwise as inherently offensive. It very much depends on context,as demonstrated by the German anti-nazi group above.
If you are a British Prince,or the son of Oswald Moseley it's probably best to avoid them
If you want to stick them on a model aeroplane, for me at least, that's fine.
Cheers
Steve
