A Welcome return to the Skies !!

After many years of battle and hard work, The Vulcan Flies again !! The only one in the World too !!

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

There is a video link there too.

I used to see these quite regularly over here right up until the Falklands Conflict in 1982 and then never saw them again.

A real credit to all those who have worked hard to restore her and raise funds for her.

    Regards.....Mark.

That is wonderful. Congratualtions to the people who built her, and i agree with the person that said it should be used for the opening of the olympics. I always loved the Vulcan and there is one situated at Southend Airport which my dad joined a club for and saw it is such a wonderful plane.

The most expensive restoration to fly yet, with zero houred engines she should be set to fly for quite some time, lets see this and the Red Arrows, plus the lovely Lancaster open the Olympics and show the world what British engineering was like before we became a nation of assemblers, lets be proud of these things instead of all this silly political correctness nonsense.

Does anyone know when the Vulcan will fly again at a public airshow? It was supposed to make it's maiden appearance (post restoration) at Duxford on the Airshow this weekend 18th-19th May but it's appearance there been cancelled.

Just a slight correction, the Vulcan was not due to appear at the Duxford May Airshow. However, there was originally planned a Friends of the Vulcan day at Duxford on 1st June 2008 but this was cancelled due to lack of funds. The first airshow of the season with the Vulcan officially listed as a possible flying participant is the R.A.F Waddington Airshow 5th-6th July. But this is all dependant on funds, weather and most importantly of all, aircraft serviceability. The only other listed flying appearances by the Vulcan this year will be R.A.F Fairford RIAT 2008 12th-13th July, and Jersey International Air Display 11th Sept 2008. However, Any Appearance By XH558 Is Subject To Serviceability, Weather And Other Considerations. Hope this helps.

I can't even begin to imagine what it must cost keeping a Vulcan airworthy...it'd sure be a real crowd puller though! I never thought id get a chance to see one fly again. The last airshow I saw it at, was from watching it at the end of the runway leaning on the fence by the side of the road! Brilliant view though!

That's the best way to see airshows - although the blue meanie police these days are much swifter to move people along under the guise of health and safety, aircraft overflying the crowd etc.

I had the opportunity in the late 60's to work for a while on a Vulcan, and fully appreciate their desire not to fly if unserviceable. Even a drop of oil hanging on a rivet head can be a sign of untowards failure somewhere along the line. An oil leak could travel nearly the length of the aircraft before finally appearing on the outer skin, and could take many hours, if not days, to trace back to the original source.

There was no plug it in and tell you where the fault is, like on modern day equipment. It was all done by feel and sight, personal knowledge and reams of text in a massive set of manuals.

So at an airshow, when they say it has been cancelled, think of the poor guy (usually the smallest on the team) stuck thru a 12" access panel, into the pitch dark, trying to locate a fault.

You wouldn't want to lose a wonderful piece of our heritage just because it disappoints a few people at an airshow.

Eventually, they will get all the snags fixed, it is early days yet, and then you will be able to see the true beauty of the design.

When it flies past, you will actually feel it inside your body. It is an experience, once felt, is never forgotten.

Completely agree with the above, thanks John! Nothing else compares!

It is planned that XH558 when performing at Airshows will display using 3/4 engine power, thus prolonging engine life as these are of the biggest concern. The airframe is not really an issue as because of the pain staking and meticulous restoration it has many more flying hours to give than the engines do. So with keeping the power to 3/4 and trying to complete displays on a single power setting we could see the Vulcan flying for another 10 to 15 years. Will be great once she gets to airshows regularly, as she will start to dag in sponsorship (hopefully!) and hence keep the funds coming in to continue flying.
