    radio set help

    hi

so i have a trainer thats been finished for quite a while but never flown few minor things to do but nothing major. the radio gear i have fitted to it is older than me im 23 and probably the last time it was used was older than me, its all original crystals and modules so think its time for an upgrade.

i dont have a clue about any of these 2.4ghz radios and dont know whats good and whats rubbish, ive been looking at maybe buying this set Futaba FF7 2.4ghz 7ch Complete Set (Tx + Rx + Servos) Mode 2

is that any good or is there better for less money etc?

    all advice would be appriciated!

btw i have never flown. the old man used to tho

    thanks iain

Hi Iain. You wont go far wrong with the futaba sets, they are a proven brand. The other brand thats very popular with flyers is the Spectrum DX range. Alot of it boils down to budget but both these brands are in the same price range, Just for your information though, I still have some of the older Futaba 35 mhz gear and it works absolutely fine so dont be afraid to use it. Alot of our flyers still use it. Just make sure you test it, carry out a range check with the airiel down and replace any batteries that you are not sure about. Are you a member of a model club?

Can be a choice of preference, some go mad about Futaba others about Spectrum. I personally go for Spectrum and have 2 radios, the DX7 and DX8. i brought the 8 because of the telemetry availability it has on board. What you have to ask yourself is this. If I'm going to learn to fly i need to join my radio to another's with a buddy lead. Make sure you get a matching make with your trainer pilot of you wont be able to pair up.

      Cheers

        Cheers for the replays.

The set thats In it is a Jr magreggor apex. It doesn't have buddy lead thing.

I'm not in a club yet but plan to join one. I think a new set would be a good choice because one of the flying sites suffers from interference.

The buddy system isn't absolutely necessary though is it? Just helpful if things go a bit pear shaped?

        Cheers iain

Hi Iain.If youve already done what Im about to suggest then I apologise. I would go up to your local flying site when the club is flying and get speaking to the guys(and gals). They will be only too pleased to help. Most clubs have some designated instructors and quite often some club radio gear with the buddy leads. If you let them have a look at your plane and set up they will be able to give you the best advise. I was taught to fly without a buddy lead and it is possible but being linked up to pilot who can take control from you with the flick of a switch is much better than someone trying to grab the transmitter out of your hand. Things go wrong really quick in RC flying and there would come a point in your training, finals on approach to landing, where the second option(grabbing the controller from you if things go bad) no longer becomes an option. Whatever you do mate, dont attempt to self teach. It doesnt work. That is unless you have a limitless budget for repairs and plenty of time to rebuild LOL

just one thing on clubs. If the club is affiliated to the BMFA you would be covered on the BMFA insurance. If it isnt then you need to check that the club has adequate insurance cover.

I haven't been yet but will go soon. Been busy with work and when not working my mountain biking hobby has been taking over lol.

My dad used to fly many years ago but he reckons he will still be able to do it. We shall see soon perhaps lol

I believe it will most Likely be saa up here Home

Alot of people up this way seem to just fly in fields out in the countryside rather than clubs so don't know how many members the club will have. Going to get in contact with the club next week when I'm on holiday from work

            Cheers iain
