    Tamiya 1/48 scale do335a pfeil

    Hi all,

I just wanted to ask if anyone had built this kit & if so, what your thoughts were? There's one on ebay and as it's always been a plane that's fascinated me, so I was thinking about getting it.

    TIA Patrick

Never built this one Patrick, but I expect that the Tamiya kit is a good one. It is an amazing looking machine. If the pilot had to bail out he could blow of the back end of the aircraft removing the rear propeller and fin!

I,ve had a quick look for info. Here is how it should be painted according to the Dornier handbook. There is an error! RLM 81 and RLM 82 replaced the old colours (RLM 70 and 71) by an order of 21/8/43 and are correct. RLM 76 replaced RLM 65 for this type of aircraft by an order of 15/8/44. The Do335 would have an RLM 76 underside! Michael Ullmann makes a good and very technical argument for this, I'm sure he is correct.

Dornier did not incorporate the change into the handbook and when it was submitted to the RLM for approval noone noticed. Maybe they were being bombed at the time!

    Cheers

Wow, that's amazing! It's beyond my humble capabilities but I'd love to see someone model that scenario! Well if I buy it, I'll let you know how it goes together- like you say Steve, normally all Tamiya stuff is 'shake & bake' but as I've never done a plane before, I'm wanting something that's detailed but doesn't need a ton of filler!

I don't know what scales you work in but if you'll do 1/32 (which is close enough to sit with 1/35 armour) I'm just building a Hasegawa 1/32 Bf109G-6. It is a very nicely detailed kit. The fit is superb and it is a simple build - not at all scary as some large scale kits can be! You armour guys are used to a lot more fiddly little bits than us anyway (I've seen all those wheels). If I wasn't hacking it up to backdate it to an earlier model I don't think I would have used any filler.

One of the kit options is for a camo scheme without any mottleing which scares some aircraft modellers, so you may not fancy it (mottleing that is!)

I've attached a couple of piccies of the WIP

        Cheers

Thanks for that Steve. If the Dornier doesn't go for much, I'll give it a go as 1/48 is still a decent size & if I mess it up, then I won't cry too much about the lost money!
