    Creating Decals

Has anyone out there had success with this process? I have a high resolution digital photo of noseart from an aicraft I am replicating. I would like to create a 1/48th scale waterslide decal of this artwork to apply to my project. If this is possible can the decal be applied in a similar fashion as any ordinary waterslide decal would be (microsol, microset, clear dullcoat etc.)? Is there software and paper available? Can this be accomplished with a PC and a color inkjet printer?

Tom, Funny you should say that, I have just bought a Hellers Junkers JU52, and plan to convert this to the 'Where Eagles Dare' aircraft. I cann't answer your question directly but if you google the following 'water slide decal paper uk' you should get a few leads. If I make progress will post results. But there are definately products with which you can create water slide Decals by running through an Ink Jet or Laserjet Printer.

I havn't been looking too hard yet as the JU52 is third on my list. Will be interested on feed back from yourself or others. Derek

      Hi Tom,

Creating your own decals is certainly a very popular subject on here and indeed it can be done on your own pc, so no problems there. I have done this a few times now with good results.

You can indeed get waterslide and even dry rub decal paper for both inkjet and laser printers and it is not expensive either

Here's the link, check out the product list on the left:

Print your own decals using your inkjet or laser printer, UK supplier

      Regards.........Mark

Thanks for the Link Mark. Would you know if you can use Microsol & Microset on this stuff successfully?

          Regards,

            Hi Tom,

Sorry can't answer that one but maybe the company who produces the paper may be able to answer that if you drop them an e-mail via their contact link.

I forgot to mention - you don't need any special software to create your decals, I have used both Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Word to do mine before now (Yes Word !! - check out the drawing options in that programme)

If you want a slightly more enhanced version of paint with Photoshop style tools - check out Paint.net - it is endorsed by Microsoft and it is free !! - it is only a small download too.

            Paint.NET - Download

            Regards......Mark

I've used this paper (for aircraft serials) and I did use microset/sol on them. No adverse effects but not sure how much use it was as I'd sealed them with a couple of acrylic coats. If you have access to a laser printer use the paper made for for that. The ink is not water soluble and I've got good results this way. Fortunately I'm able to use the laser printers at work!

I use Adobe Illustrator for my decals and print them using my inkjet printer, you will have to coat the decals prior to immersing them in water though, Johnsons Klear or Humbrol clear coat, best to spray this on as it will give a finer and smoother finish. The only problem with using inkjet printers is that it can come out a bit see through and you cannot print white that would have to be done on white decal paper.
