    Help with leather....oooh err.

Any of you armour/diorama chaps got any tips for painting leather. The oleo rod (the shiny "shock absorbery" bit that ultimately joins the oleo cylinder to the wheel assembly)on my Ju88 has a leather boot on it. I'm thinking paint it ,dry brush highlights and give it a really filthy wash but any expert advice most gratefully received.

    Cheers

Hi Steve, if you have any oil paints in your box, I'd use them. Burnt sienna & raw umber both make nice leathery colours plus they can be easily blended to show wear n tear. They also leave a nice slightly shiny look. Of course, they do take a few days to dry!

I've already painted the base colour but I'll give some oils a go.

        Hi Steve,

How about a quick dab of Klear when you've got the right colour and weathering done? That should give it a suitably shiny surface look.

Another suggestion Steve, which ever way you jump let the paint dry completely then with a dry brush (no paint at all) go over the paintwork.....you will get a lovely semi-matt finish, just like the gaiters I gets my wife to wear, OOh' ar........memories!

Thanks chaps. I don't want it too shiny as I figure they'd be pretty well weathered and also pick up hydraulic oil from any dodgy seals in the oleo system. I speak as a man who once had a motorcycle deposit all the oil from a front fork on his trousers. I like that one Ron,I've never tried it. Just goes to show that you live and learn!

            Cheers

So you dry brush your wife's gaiters then Ron? What an interesting hobby! I'll have to try it sometime (With MY wife not yours!).
