    Paints, brushes & glu

iv recently got back into the hobby and i am looking for some new brushes and paints for some up coming models. I brush paint all my models and have used tamiya paints in the past but am finding it hard to get good colour matches and to thin them easliy.

I have concidered geting either Xtracrylix or vallejo paints.

My next planes are a hawker typhoon and a me 163 so il want close matches

also i need some brushes of medium to large size are there any good brands or are the local art shop ones surfficient. and are there any particular brush types suited fro dry brushing??

iv always used plastic weld as it bonds well and can be easily placed into joins, is this the best option

    thank you

Hi Mark, either of the brands that you mention are fine for brushing. I've not used Xtracrylix myself but I've heard good things about them. Vallejo are excellent & you might want to consider Lifecolor also. Personally I wouldn't use Tamiya for hand-brushing but that's just a personal preference. I started off using cheap Revell brushes & was quite happy with them until my local art shop had a sale so I picked up some lovely sable one's for a fiver and they have been excellent. I drybrush with a large sable brush, size 8, coming down to a 4 for smaller areas. For glue I use the Revell liquid stuff & Tamiya extra- thin when I can find it-it's been in short supply recently. Hope this helps Patrick

The best colour matches by far are from Xtracrylix. I've never brush painted Xtracrylix on a large area so you might need to experiment with that but they are my first choice when spraying. As for Vallejo as Patrick says, good paints. I have also heard good things about Lifecolor. I don't use Tamiya but the weight of opinion would seem to be that they just don't brush well.

yes iv found that tamiya arnt as good as the few vallejo colours i own, i work mainly in 1/72 and 1/48 as am at uni and space for completed models is limited, as am after german colours next i think i will use the xtracrylix mainly but begin to expand my vallejo paints as well

will have a look in my local art shop for some brushes then

also is the micro scale clear glue any good or what other brand should i get, have been using the humbrol stuff for some time and its starting to really annoy me being so thick and gloopy

Do you mean Krystal Klear, the stuff for clear parts? It's a white glue (dries clear) that looks suspiciously like P.V.A. wood glue. Not as thick as Humbrol Clearfix but not thin either. It has the ability to fill any small gaps around the clear part which can be useful.

I can assure you that the Xtracrylix Luftwaffe colours are as well matched to the original RLM paint colours as current knowledge allows. I've been looking at RLM colours and following the various debates for years! The same goes for their RAF colours which are matched to the paint chips in the museum at Hendon. I can also recommend the White Ensign Colourcoats for anyone using enamel paints.
